The new "what's the dress colour?" controversy...
I thought this would be tiresome crap too, until I listened to the audio.

Laurel or yanny, people can't decide
A widely shared audio clip has divided the internet into two warring tribes - those who hear "yanny" and those who hear "laurel".http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-44136799
I definitely heard the word 'yanny' not laurel - I assumed I would hear laurel too. There is a technical explanation in the article which shows that both are right!
What do you hear?

Just listened to this on a different website to your link but having heard it I'm surprised anyone hears Laurel.

Yanny for me, maybe if it's a high/low frequency thing, it depends a lot on what you hear it through, and your hearing I guess.
Through a Logitech 5.1 THX system plugged into my PC... it's Yanny!

Laurel.
Though the first time I heard it on the car radio (decent quality one) it was Yanny.
Now can't hear that at all.

Laurel... i can't hear yanny at all, is it because i hear a real word not just a made up word?

2-2 in our house.
Laurel for me.
It's a man's voice saying it clearly with L's at either end.
Others hear a 'whiny' voice saying yanny.
Bizarre.

The word spoken is quite fly as it is a combination of both words but at different frequencies, hence why people hear different words.
I hear Yammi, but thats because I am old.
The older you get, you start losing the high frequency that laurel is giving out, hence you hear the lower frequency Yammi.
You will likely find that it is younger people or children that hear Laurel.
This phenomena was used a few years back to clear young yobs out of a shopping malls entrance, by blasting hellish music (likely Max Bygraves :D) in high frequencies out of the tanoy system, so they had to leave, while the old codgers carried out their shopping without hearing it. I do not think it was successful enough, as it was not used elsewhere.
