Page 1 of Ripping CDs

I know this is a bit old school but...

Trying to use Windows media player (Windows 10) to rip a track from a CD.
I've done loads in the distant past.
Although player is set to rip in MP3 format it stubbornly refuses to do so and I seem to end up with a .cda file.

I just need said track on my Samsung S10 and I've spent over an hour on this and it's doing my nut in.

Any wise words?

Last time I ripped a CD, I used an application called CDex, on a Windows 98 machine. I don't know if it will work on a modern machine, but it rips straight from CD to mp3 or wav without much faff, even letting you set the bitrate.

Just searching the directory on my HD threw up a Windows Defender warning for another file, telling me it had a 2018 ransomware. The file is a 2000 program though. Unless ransomware can travel through time...

I don't know if that old version will work, and it might be quicker to just search for a newer version of CDex

I've always found media player a ball ache and use dbpoweramp. You can use that free for 21 days ot this free program is great too. Available here and Windows store.

EAC is great but my go to is foobar2000.
I don't do too many CDs nowadays (a dozen or so a year) but I do use it to convert between filetypes and bitrates (flac to mp3 etc.)

If it still doesn't rip with other software, it could be that the disc has a form of copy protection.

I remember trying to rip some of my brother's CDs a few years ago and encountered a few copy protected discs. I tried a bunch of different solutions but in the end I just downloaded some rips instead.

Managed to do it in the past with the same track on my old phone that got nicked so I know it's possible.
