Review of Complete Mary Mungo and Midge, The

    7 / 10

    Introduction

Kult Kids Gold bring to DVD all 13 episodes of 70’s classic cartoon series Mary, Mungo and Midge.

Mary is a little girl, Mungo is a dog, and Midge is a mouse. They all live with Mary’s parents, in a flat…and if you’re not beginning to remember them by now, then you’re probably not a real fan!

    Video

The picture is dated, but that is to be expected for a 25 year-old cartoon. It is presented in its broadcasted 4:3 ratio, and although there are of black specks over the print, I doubt this will put any fans off buying the disc.

    Audio

The original mono soundtrack is available, and quite rightly so. The cartoon would have benefited nothing from a full 5.1 soundtrack, and might have even sounded fake. The catchy music is still here to be listened to at the end of each episode.

    Features

A game, “Where’s Midge” can be played. It will only keep you amused for a few minutes, but at least something has been included for what must be a hard title to find extras for.

The menus, however, are excellent; really showing effort has been put in. They are animated and have some of the cartoon’s narration over the top.

    Conclusion

Unfortunately I am much too young to have watched this originally, but not that young that I could not enjoy what is undoubtedly a very English and very enjoyable BBC cartoon. Mary, Mungo and Midge is ideal for this Kult Kids label, as it no doubt will bring back feelings of nostalgia with its innocent yet interesting storylines, very much different to today’s more cynical (The Simpsons) or irritating (Teletubbies) animations series.

This disc is thoroughly recommended to anyone around to remember space hoppers, The Bay City Rollers or other icons of the 70’s. It’s always great to have an entire series on one disc, with all thirteen 15-minutes episodes included on this DVD. And priced cheaply too!
