Review of Only Fools And Horses: Jolly Boys Outing

    8 / 10

    Introduction

Arriving at the same time as Frog’s Legacy (see my review) this marks the second DVD release of the once annual Only Fools and Horses Xmas specials. Xmas seems somewhat empty without a regular dose of Fools and Horses so now you can buy this DVD and make every Xmas entertaining again . . . if you like :).

This episode takes place just before Rodney’s first wedding anniversary so we have Cassandra and family joining the long established regulars in an unforgettable adventure. The Jolly Boy’s outing of the title is lads day out to Margate. All the regulars from the Nags Head public house get together for a but did it make me jolly?

    Video

As with the previous special, Frogs Legacy, this 4:3 transfer is very sharp and hasn’t aged at all from it’s first screening. It’s nice to see these discs looking so good, the series deserves no less in my opinion.

    Audio

This disc has a Stereo soundtrack. I wasn’t expecting much from this audio track however in places the sound quality is lacking. Nothing major but having watched this straight after Frogs Legacy this one definitely sounded worse.

    Features

Absolutely nothing! I know it’s a DVD of a TV series but there must be something they could have added to the disc?.

    Conclusion

This episode of Only Fools and Horses is probably as good as it ever gets. Aside from the final 3 episodes which saw the last of the Trotter family this one has long been a personal favourite and enjoyed terrific viewing figures at the time.

This festive outing from 1989 takes everything that makes Only Fools and Horses so great and puts it in various hilarious situations. You have Del, Rodney and Uncle Albert at their finest along with all the supporting cast regulars. This really showcases the wide range of talent in the cast and writers, it’s no surprise that the series was such a success.

I`d love to mention certain scenes but there are so many priceless moments in this episode that I`d be here all week just listing them, suffice to say it`s one of the funniest ever.

Unlike the other Xmas special disc this one has a running time of 80 minutes which, although not amazing value for money compared to the whole of season 1 on a single DVD, is still worth a look.

At the end of the day this is classic Only Fools and Horses and is an essential purchase if you’re a fan, it doesn’t get much better than this.
