This really is shocking.  My sister just called (works in the NHS) and this is having a massive impact.
Major ops being cancelled.  This could be disastrous.

It looks like a lot of ransomware from what I could tell from images posted on twitter, which is obviously bad but may mean patient data isn't compromised and all their PCs can be wiped and restored back to working condition.

Rob, while patient data may not be compromised, patient's health certainly can be. Their medical records can be inaccessible which in some cases could actually affect crucial and potential life or death decisions.

Been watching the news of this multi-country hacking, and the criminals want paid in bitcoin, so surely the account can be traced? (Or can it? I do not understand why bitcoin payment can be untraceable).

So called data crime Experts on the news say the criminals may get up to 10% of money from victims worldwide, so that's a lot of cash.

I did say it was bad, just not as bad as it could be. Ransomware on a computer usually results in data loss (because lots of people still do not back up!), but at least in this instance they can wipe any affected system and apply the Microsoft security patch they should have applied in March.

If this was a data breach then systems could be down for longer.

It's probably fair to say that this wasn't a targeted attack, rather a roaming program that was just looking for a backdoor into a vulnerable system, and given that the NHS hasn't got the money to upgrade their systems to something that's still being supported by Microsoft, it was probably only a matter of time before this kind of thing was exploited.
