New PC

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 31st August 2016, 13:36

Well nearly.
Finally got the necessary to buy one and frankly my head hurts looking at the various options.
I've come across Freshtech who are selling through Amazon and seem to be
A. a bit cheaper than most and
B. infinitely varied in the options they offer.

Anyone know them and what's the cheapest (legal) option of buying Win 10 if I buy one with no operating system.

It's either that or the Zoostorm I linked to before

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.

Just make sure you buy one with a very quiet cooling fan running on slow speed most of the time.

i made a mistake with a desktop PC which I bought out of PC world, and the fan was forever at high speed. Took me some fight with PC world to get a different computer, as they kept taking it away for repair,

Took nearly two months before they agreed it was noisy, and then I could choose a replacement, which I did but cost another £100 on top.

I can recommend Freshtech. They usually have machines ready to go that can work out 50 cheaper than building it yourself.
My parents bought an i5 desktop through their ebay store at the beginning of the year that arrived with a dead PSU, I was RMA and replacement sent out within 3 days.

Have a search of them on hotukdeals

We have (limited) lift off.
Finally a new PC graces chez Snaps.
It's a Techtribe from a local independent supplier (Digital Promotions) who I've had the odd bit and piece from before and they seemed fairly competitive. There's also the advantage that there's a face I can shout at if something goes wrong.
I say limited as this win 10 lark is a steepish learning curve and it's going to take me a while to get everything installed and up and running the way I want.
Expect the odd WTF question over the next few week if me and Google can't figure something out.

Not so much a question as a WTF at the following.

Quote:
If you're using Windows 10, be warned that the new Edge browser doesn't support Silverlight either (yes, Microsoft's own browser doesn't support Microsoft's own plugin)
Neither does it support Chrome so I've got to download Firefox again just to watch
Sky Go. Spent yesterday installing stuff with a VGA connection.
HDMI lead supplied with monitor but graphics card was mini HDMI so back to the shop. Needed to anyway as a 15 metre Ethernet lead I bought way back but never unwrapped turned out to be just a phone lead.
So now I have to cable up the Man cave, seen bigger walk in wardrobes.

Are you saying Win 10 doesn't support Chrome? Because it does.

Also, Win 10 includes IE11, which does support Silverlight. It's just not made obvious that it's still available as they want to push people towards Edge, which is rubbish.

I suspect he means Chrome browser doesn't support silverlight?

There is also sky go 'app' for win 10, which may be a better option.

He did. Sorry for the confusion.
I'll try the app.

Here's a suggestion for any Thunderbird users who are thinking of importing their old data onto a new PC.
Don't!
Luckily as mine's a new PC the ultimate deterrent (re install Win 10) wasn't the total pain it could have been.
Not only did trying to import stuff screw up T'bird it screwed up the keyboard and no amount of uninstall/re install would sort it. Looking on Thunderbirds help files was shall we say unhelpful with suggestions to start a new profile which looked like a lesson in coding and well over the two to three syllables I can cope with.

After a day of serious wall thumping aggravation I'm back to approaching normal and treading very carefully to try and get at least my address book to port across.

Don't you just love time saving modern technology.
