Can anyone recommend a good (free) website that i can download software to convert my dvds so that i can play them on my PSP.

Have been looking around but drawn a blank as theyre all free trials.

Yep.

Assuming you`re on a 32bit version of Windows...get hold of "DVD43" (this handles the DVD decryption on the fly).
dvd43.com/

Then get  "Handbrake". This will do the actual conversion (there are presets (IIRC) for the PSP).
handbrake.fr/

Both free bits of software and will do exactly as you need.

I use XMedia Recode for my phone, two mp3 players & netbook.
The list of settings includes the PSP.
Very easy to use.

The  Interface by default is in German. To change to English,
Select Optionen, Sprache, English to change the user interface language to English.
Worth a look

I like Handbrake, but you need a fast PC to get the best from it, & its not the easiest program to use if you haven`t done much ripping

I`ve always used PSPVideo9. It`ll convert virtually any video format (including vobs if you can rip your DVD) and there`s various options regarding conversion quality

I found the adverts a nuisance (sp?) in PSPVideo9. I used to use it loads until it started crashing a lot, which I then worked out was due to the adverts. As soon as I stopped it accessing the Internet it worked perfectly.

That was a few years ago though. Perhaps RedKawa (or is it Videora now?) have improved things.

Handbrake seems good. My pc is nothing special, bog standard and used only for net. It says that to encode a movie takes over six hours, is this the norm, I get 8-10mb broadband at my house.

No-one can say accurately how long an encode will take, as it depends on CPU speed, disk speed, memory speed etc. as well as the codecs used, the bitrates etc.

For use on the PSP, if it were me I`d be encoding using the MPEG4 video codec (not H.264 - that will take a long time and you don`t really notice the difference on the small screen). I`d also just go for one-pass rather than two.

I`d probably also specify a file-size of approx 400-500MB rather than a video bitrate, with AAC 128kbps Stereo for the audio. (400MB for a short`ish film of 1h30m, 500MB for the longer ones).

But you should play around with the settings to see what works best for you, but it is often a quality vs `time taken to encode` decision to be made.

The psp I have I bought from a workmate. It has custom firmware and emulators on it that he assures me make the machine desirable. Trouble is I can`t use it to connect to playstation store as it would update and the emulators wouldn`t work. Whilst its true there`s a lot of games on the machine (100+) I rarely play any of them. Is the fact its customised etc really that great or should I just do away with it all so I can use it to go online??
