Page 1 of Whisky / Whiskey

It`s not something I`ve drunk much of in the past but recently started drinking a bit more so was thinking of getting a couple of bottles in the apartment for a dabble every now and then.

Are there any big whisky drinkers in the forum who want to recommend anything before I go out and buy some?  ( As there are a load of Scots in these forums I`m guessing there should be a few! )

go and buy some proper Whiskey like Bush Mills or Black Bush... none of that scottish stuff, the Irish invented it!

Back in the late eighties when i was completing an HND, i completed my end of course project on the art of `Whisky/Whiskey`, i wrote to all the major distilleries, and some of the smallers ones, i received back many interesting books/letters on the history of each distillery... some even sents some rather nice samples!  I guess they were amazed a 19/20 years old was interested in real whiskey... not just Jack Daniels or Wild Turkey!

Before buying a couple of bottles in try a couple of miniatures of whatever takes your fancy. That way you may find a Whisky you really like   

Rosebank 18 year old Lowland , Bunnahabhain 12  year old and  Bruichladdich 12 year old Islay`s (Spelling ) are all worth a go.

Cant say i have had the pleasure tasting all that Scotland and the Islands have to offer... i am sure most are very palatable, i prefer the smokey flavour of the Irish Whisky. 

depends what u like really, for a peaty earthy taste laphroaig takes some beating, blended bells is popular but the old boys when i was bar tending generally went for black bottle.

I`m not expert, but like a lot of things, you get what you pay for,
often off licenses and supermarkets do some of the £30 single malt bottles for £20 or less (which in the grand scale of things is still cheap stuff), so I generally buy a bottle of single malt when it`s on good offer.

It`s hard for ppl to recommend really, as it`s not just a case of more expensive is better, some ppl like the heavier, peaty ones, others not so much, so as Choagy says, miniatures are good to get an idea of what you like. Saying that at Christmas my missus got me one of those boxes wher eyou get 4 different minatures, ages 10-15 years, 1 was ok, the other 3 were firewater!

I generally prefer single malts, but that`s not to say I turn my nose up at any blends, as there are good blends as well.

When I was in Scotland on holiday was I went on a distillery tour, was interesting, and you got a sample as part of it, I think it was Glenturret which is now part of Famous Grouse.

Someone I used to work with knows much more than me about it, and recommends Jura as an excellent value for money single malt, it`s available in supermarkets and is often on offer.

I think Irish ones are generally sweeter aren`t they? I`ve got some Bushmills at the moment, it`s ok, a mate of mine really likes it which is why I bought it, but it`s less my cup of tea than his.

Well I think I`ve only tried (that I can remember) single malts.  Talisker (10) and Glenfiddich (12) are two I`ve had and really liked but then I`ve got nothing else to compare them with so I might be drinking cats plss for all I know!  Having said that, if you like the taste of something you like the taste of it, regardless of what it`s called or others say.  I`m like that with my red wines.

If you want to try something a little different then try Penderyn. It`s a Welsh single malt at 46%.

The reviews are up and down with its relatively young age counting against it with some. But I don`t know how much snobbery there is out there. I like it though.
