It`s a numbers game.............

Fecker (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 24th May 2001, 11:15

I`m having a "how many DVDs have you got" War with a workmate.
I`ve got 34 after 9 months of collecting.
Everytime he buys one, I have to buy another to keep ahead! I`m now locked in to a life of wage slavery just to cover my on-line DVD buying habit...

How sad are the rest of you - no lying please.

a while ago i had to sit back and take in actually how much i spend per month on dvds. the result was quite frightening!!! ive had my dvd player since last october (around 7 months) and i own around 80 discs. if on average a disc costs £15 thats £1200 in total and roughly £171 per month. thats f*****g ridiculous!!!!! and i wonder why i never have any money!? its the bloody internets fault, always finding bargain dvds on it! anyway im now being far more restrictive now and only buy one if i REALLY want it.

you know what they say - just cos its cheap doesnt mean its a bargain...

I know what you mean.
I`ve bought 34 since Jan. The up side is that I no longer pay that much for them & try to limit it to just buying ones I really want when I find them at a good price.
I was looking at some of the early DVD`s I bought & was quite annoyed when I remember that I was paying £18 and £20 for them.

Shocking behaviour. ;)

I have a former workmate who got his DVD player after me. Of course I started with more but he had to turn it into a competition. After about 30 we were even. After that he constantly overtook me. When I had 40, he had 50, when I had 50, he had 70. Now I`m on 80-odd but I get them dirt cheap from Canada (£10 a pop for latest releases - the benefits of a Canadian girlfriend) and he is on something daft like 120. I even sell naff ones to him, he figures its -1 from me and +1 to him.

But then I say, well, I don`t have a wife, ex-wife and 3 kids to support so when they`re busting his balls to go to college and all he can offer is a large library of cr*p DVD`s he`s going to feel pretty stupid. :D

Did anyone stock pile VHS movies in the past - or does DVD offer a better long term investment/non degredation of the media?

daveo - I suppose DVD will degrade like CD is supposed to i.e about 20 years, but probably longer than that cos we all keep them in their little cases in the dark.

CDs and DVDs shouldn`t degrade significantly if stored properly and kept out of sunlight. There`s nothing to wear out or fade away.

Nobody truly knows how long they will last, but I suspect it`s closer to 2000 years than 20 (heck, even VHS is supposed to last 25 years).

It`s a sad indictment of our modern society etc.......
