What was the last DVD that you bought before switching to Blu-ray?

Jitendar Canth (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 7th January 2017, 15:57

And conversely, the last disc you bought before switching to digital, or if you can remember that far back, the last VHS tape before buying DVD?

I can't remember the exact last video tape, but it was around 2000, so it probably would have been The Matrix, or The Phantom Menace, or knowing me, it was the Captain Caveman tape I found in a bargain bucket. I do know that the minute I had my DVD player, my videotape buying stopped, immediately.

The last DVD I bought before getting a Blu-ray player was The Men Who Stare at Goats. Unlike before though, I'm still buying DVDs alongside Blu-rays. There are so many old TV shows that will never be improved by HD, and companies still release stuff on DVD only,

As for digital, I doubt I'll ever switch, even though I do make use of the odd streaming site, and iPlayer. Content libraries online are so impermanent, and are dictated by what they want to sell you, not what you want to watch. And I fully expect Russian hackers to destroy the Internet within a few years.

Hmm, I think the last VHS tape I bought might have been Aliens, I seem to remember taking it back a few times looking for one that didn't have a really noisey flutter on the audio (god VHS audio was awful at times with their cheap mass duplication).

The moment I heard about DVD possibly being a thing, I decided I'd stop throwing money at VHS and wait for it.

The last DVD I bought is harder to nail down, but I think it was District 9?

I remember the trial and error process of buying videos. Scratchy audio, skewed image. There were a dozen things that could go wrong. I only tried that a couple times with DVD, realising pretty quickly that I was only getting the exact same disc back again.

Have no intention of buying blueray, as it is likely just a fad. I stick with DVD.

If you go into shops like HMV there might be two rows out of twenty that are blueray and the rest is still DVD.

That tells you it has been a very difficult struggle for the public to accept blueray. Likely as they do not want to change from their large collection of DVD's. Like me : D

Utter rubbish. BD has been around for a decade and has achieved decent market penetration. That's hardly a fad. It's the format of choice for film enthusiasts and has been for years. You can buy players for less than £40 in places like supermarkets. It's hardly a niche product. The small HMV in the city centre where I live has two entire sections devoted to it. Most supermarkets have more than two rows. CEX has two entire displays. Also, it's Blu-ray. The fact that you misspell it and complain about how much of a rip off it is in every single thread pertaining to the format on these boards just highlights what a troll you are. Give it a rest.

Anyway, back tot he original question...

Like Rob I gave up buying VHS when I heard of a new digital optical disc format that would be able to fit entire films on a single disc (unlike VCD). The last VHS tape I bought was The Phantom Menace, only because it wasn't originally released on DVD. I can't for the life of me remember what the last DVD I bought was. I pretty much stopped buying them as I got them through DVDActive... I think it might have been the limited editions of the Star Wars trilogy (the ones with the bonus discs that included the non-SE versions), but I can't be 100% sure.

WOW!

Got you all really stirred up over a BLUE-RAY, must have been all your drinking over the festive season, and not sobered up yet

Anyway something else will take bluerays place in the next decade, so not worth bothering a rats tail about it then, he he.

I would guess plug in super fast memory sticks will be next, aka: Star trek.

Streaming from digital libraries will replace it.  I already only buy digital films now from Amazon, mainly due to lack of space it must be said.  Years ago I would have been concerned about the lack of extras, but I've kind of lost interest in them due to excessive EPK on discs over the years.

I was a late adapter to Blu-Ray, never thought I'd see the point as HD TV at that point was rather poor, but the difference is astounding.

No, it's your constant, ill-informed trolling that gets me 'stirred up'. I can't remember you ever adding anything of worth to a thread in all the time you've been posting here. You just seem to take pleasure in derailing legitimate discussions with utter drivel.
