RE: Audition - Site and Visitor`s Reviews

Wheyhey! I was sort of hoping from some feed back on this one.

The comments I made in my review weren`t intended to be personal jibes, but I do find on all DVD publications (online and print media) that often the quality of the film itself is glossed over in favour of the technical details, hence Star Wars Ep1 DVD being considered a must buy even though it`s a crap film, while a gem like Audition slips through the net. I agree that technically, the film fails to set the DVD world alight, however it is the only version available at the moment, and so I bought a copy because god knows how long it will take for a Special Edition to make an appearence, if at all.

Thing is, when the two issues - film quality and DVD specs - are confused. Chris mentions that "Much of this disinterest stems from the below par video and sound quality" which I couldn`t see myself (sure it was a crap transfer, but - I dunno - I didn`t get too bothered after about ten minutes). I felt that the film itself got an unfair assesment because of its poor presentation. I stand by my comments that I thought the film was excellent, and you`re of course entitled to your opinion (I`m not going to go "You obviously didn`t get it!" as I hate it when people say that to me about films I hated - Scary Movie, for example!) but at the same time, I`d hate to see people put off because they think it`s a one-scene movie, given that there`s a lot more going on there than the publishers themselves seem to realise.

RE: R2 release of Natural Born Killers?

NBK will probably turn up on R2 early next year - no idea about the features on it yet.

RE: Song Of The South

I doubt Disney will ever release the film on DVD either.

Why? Well they refuse to release it in the States at all, and the very fact that DVD players can be hacked would mean that it would ba e lot easier for American customers to get hold of (even if a lot of Americans seem utterly bewildered by the idea of Multi-region DVD players). At the moment there are UK PAL copies of the video floating round and quite easy to get hold of, but lets be honest, a DVD is unrealistic.

I mean do you honestly expect Disney UK to do something for *us* ?!

:)

RE: R1 or R2 Superman

R2 version is pretty much the same as the US one, with an RRP of £19.99.

Although we don`t get a box set, Superman 2 comes out the same day with an RRP of only £15.99, and I`d expect the others to come out shortly afterwards at the same price. Shop around and it should work out the same. In fact it wouldn`t surprise me if Warner chucked out a box set after all four were released...

RE: Any comments on Radiohead - Meeting People Is Easy

The film is good, but I hear the dvd is barest of bare bones (not even a menu/chapter points I hear). Not sure about sound/video quality either.

RE: MIB Limited Edition - Silver Case

If you can`t find it, don`t worry, it`s really not worth the extra cash - the standard edition has all the worthwhile features and none of the pointless gimicks.

RE: HALLOWEEN ON R2!!! WHOOP!

Support your local Anchor Bay outlet, eh? :)

RE: SFA @ PLAY

I wish they`d used the same technology as used on the R1 Blair Witch 2 disc though, y`know with a CD on the B-side so that you don`t have to only watch it through your tv - either that or easily accessible mp3/music files on the disc which I could get at. *sigh*

Otherwise, pretty damn impressive (lovely menus too...) but - dammit - how am I going to listen to it on the way to work? :)

RE: Akira - limited edition tin box.

Bit of a relief that I`m not the only one waiting on this (obvious though given the "out of stock" messages on all and every website). My order status claims "Order Taken" and frankly I don`t give a toss if it comes in a tin or not...

RE: Snatch R1 Rce

fair enough... :)

Was about to get all "oh fer gods sake, they`re the same!" but that`ll do me...

RE: Snatch R1 Rce

Forgive the question, but why didn`t you just get the R2 version?

RE: Here are Amazon Coupons (uk + com)

I think one of the main reasons that Amazon has high pricing is because ... ready yourselves for this ... they`re trying to make a profit. Dot Coms work only because people pour in cash and do anything for sales, Amazon might be pricier than some, but they`re not daft, and will undoubtably be about for a lot longer than many other "cheap" (ie suicidal) online dvd companies. The blame for the con should lie with the publishers whose astronomical dealer prices force the shops to sell them so high.

RE: IMPORTANT DVD QUESTIONS! PLEASE ANSWER!

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Don`t hold your breath - It will probably depend on how succesful the video box set is.

Now enough with ordering people around!

RE: TRAFFIC

I thought the TV series was a lot better. More time to develop the storylines and Bill Patterson and Lindsay Duncan are far better than Michael Douglas or Catherine Zeta Jones. Interestingly dispite the fact it was made over eleven years ago, the whole colour-coded filters thing which people got excited about in the film made its first appearence in the tv version.

RE: Hannable/silence of the lambs boxset

Only downside on this one is the inclusion of Hannibal, which is pants - actually spoiled the memory of Silence Of The Lambs for me...

RE: WH Smiths online DVDs at 9.99

Good deal on the Sopranos Box sets too - get both compete boxes for £80. Not bad at all.

RE: Requiem for a Dream Release date

The R2 version is out on 6th August with a director`s commentary, deleted scenes, Tappy Tippons` Life Story, `Making Of`. `Memories, Dreams & Addictions` - Interviews with Ellen Burstyn, Anatomy Of A Scene and the usual trailer/tv-spots. Its in DD 5.1 too, no word about its aspect ratio though.

One reason to wait for the R2 version is that you won`t run the risk of getting the cut version which got the R rating in the States, oh and the R2 cover is a *lot* nicer, which sells it for me!

RE: Scan!!

Well, I`ve got a Scan and I`m very happy with it.

I`m not joining the argument or anything, just thought you might like to know... :)

RE: The Exorcist. Director`s Cut.

I wouldn`t bother with it if I were you. As smithy says it`s a cash in. You get the deleted scenes in the original DVD version (which you should be able to pick up for under a tenner) and the - perfectly reasonable - explanation why they were omitted first time round.

RE: `Paperhouse` out soon

Yep, it`s the British film Bernard Rose made before Candyman. A fairly bare-bones disc, I think, but if the price is okay, it`s worth it for the film.

RE: What is the WORST extra you have found on a DVD?

The editing studio in MiB special edition. Very snazzy but utterly pointless.

RE: Dogma special editon

Don`t forget the original US release of Dogma was as crap as the R2 version, the SE turning up later. Doubt we`ll get it here for a while though unless FilmFour can license the extras of Columbia Tristar. The whole distribution thing is a bloody complicated web. I just wish the darned thing wasn`t RCE. Dammit.

RE: Chasing Amy

The animated series is excellent, definately worth shelling out for. Kevin Smith with visual imagination - shock, horror.

RE: What region is best for BLADE!!

Then again, you could probably pick up a copy of the R2 version for under a tenner from most highstreet stores, which might be a contributing factor...

Oops, you`ve already mentioned that. I`d go for the R2 version then - 8 quid is decent deal.

RE: Chasing Amy

The version from Play247 is the Criterion one - good price too last time I checked.

Interestingly Artificial Eye are sorting out a R2 release for the Clerks special edition with all the special features in tact. Only thing that`s holding them back at the moment are a few copyright issues on one of the music videos. I mention this as a couple of people I know with the R1 version have had a few problems with lip-synch...

RE: Brazil - Criterion edition

Not sure if they`re clear about the regional coding on the Criterion site, but yes Brazil is Region 0.

RE: crouching tiger hidden dialogue...

I noticed that with the DVD version of `Harry, He`s Here To Help`

I didn`t remember exactly the subtitles from when I saw it at the cinema, but they seemed different - more literal - than before. Oddly the subtitles on the clips in the `Making Of...` doc confirmed this, being the same as the cinema ones - and better. Maybe I should just learn a few more languages.

RE: SE7EN

I picked up a second hand copy of the MiB 2 Disc set from Electronics Boutique and I must admit I can`t quite see the point of most of the crap on it. If anyone ever bothered playing with the "editing room" once, I can`t imagine anyone loading it up a second time.

As far as extras go, I`ll always settle for commentaries over anything else, and I`ll honestly never go for any gimmicks ever again... :)

RE: Game are great, HHHOOORRAAYYYYYYY

You ask how much it costs to say, sorry that was a mistake, well that would be bugger all, but the cost of honoring such a mistake could stretch to tens of thousands, which could screw up prices elsewhere, or cause serious problems in a company`s finances (these are e-commerce sites don`t forget, they are VERY delicate). It always amuses me on these boards when people complain about companies not honoring prices which are so obviously mistakes, if the company has the choice of losing a customer or going bust I don`t think "honour" comes into it - nor should it. So as far as I can see, getting self righteous about it is a bit purile.

I don`t tend to go for one-off bargains unless they`re specified as such. Play247`s prices are good enough for me, if not I`ll wait for a sale.

RE: The Wicker Man

Anchor Bay`s website lists a two disc special edition version of The Wicker Man to be released in "Mid 2001" including standard and "extended" versions.

I heard that Christopher Lee himself is backing a (maybe the same one?) DVD release of the film, so it might have some nice extras in there too.

I caught an extended version on Film Four last year - it was cribbed from a video version (complete with the video logo!) but contained a lot of excellent new material. The picture quality wasn`t up to much, but given that the rumors sugges the original film was burnt, beggars can`t be choosers.
