Review of X Files, The: Existence

    8 / 10

    Introduction

Existence is two episodes ("Essence" and "Existence") spliced together and are from the end of Series 8. X Files fans with Sky have already followed the story while the rest of us get it on the BBC early next year. This is quite an eye opener and it`s interesting that Fox have decided to sell it separately like Deadalive. It`s a testament to how good the writing on Existence is that it can be sold separately. So, time to say goodbye to David Duchovny.

    Video

This DVD is presented with a 1.78:1 anamorphic transfer and while I`m thankful that it`s widescreen, I`m not pleased about the quality. It`s grainy and can be a little off putting to start with. From what I understand, all X Files DVDs have the same problem. But where does this grain creep in because it`s not broadcast like this! Despite the this however, the detailing and colour is good with the dark gloom of X Files ever present.

    Audio

Since this is taken from the television series it`s no surprise that this is presented in Dolby Surround. The sound and music quality is pretty good and I was getting tense as the action heated up, finding myself on the edge of my seat. Mark Snow`s theme sounded clear as did the dialogue and other sound effects. The sound is still quite effective in Dolby Surround and I was completely engrossed in the story.

    Features

Static menus with language selection, chapter selection and behind the scenes. Behind the Scenes are two sections, Alex Krycek revealed, 1 and 2. This is a 2 and 4.5 minute featurette which could have been combined, but then that would be too easy wouldn`t it? This is a quick intro to the character of Alex Krycek and unfortunately doesn`t provide any real enlightenment. In addition to English, there`s French and German with four subtitle options. Lastly before I forget, there`s an Existence Collectors Card in the package, one of many I`m sure!

    Conclusion

This is a must for fans of the show. However if, like me, you tend to dip in and out of the series then you`ll enjoy X Files: Existence as well. While it`s good to know some of the background to the events leading up to Scully being pregnant, it`s nonetheless very good entertainment. I was on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed watching this. It`s a great way to end season 8 and for me sets up Agent Doggett nicely for his permanent role, plus we get to see more of Agent Reyes for future appearances. Robert Patrick is a very good reason for me to get back into the series. This freshness is long overdue and X Files Existence is a good addition to any sci-fi collection.
