No need to ban them, it's technically quite easy to just not show content to people who block ads. Content providers just need to decide that is the route they want to take.

Only a technological idiot in the pockets of lobbyists would think otherwise... oh wait, now I understand John Whittingdale's position.

I've noticed recently a few news sites won't work with adblocking, unfortunately disabling adblock plus doesn't always work on the page to let you see the content :(

Whilst that's true, that adblockers will go somewhere else if they can't view something without ads, it's quite a simplistic view.

Firstly, the assumption any view is good for the site. I'm not sure this is anything other than a self-righteous position by someone who blocks ads. It might not cost a significant amount of money to serve content to an individual user, but if say 10% of your users block ads, then that starts to become a noticeable part of your server/bandwidth costs.

Secondly, if a significant number of major content providers blocked users who have adblockers, then there wouldn't be much left on the internet for people to read. And you can't always go read something somewhere else, because often it doesn't exist anywhere else.

It's unfortunate that the advertising industry, because it's definitely not the content industry that has caused this situation, has consistently been at best selfish and at worst a destroyer of good internet content providers.

Thankfully we have things like Patreon that seem to be allowing good content to survive.

have played with brave a bit, seems ok, still a work in progress, it's built on chromium, but some features, like bookmarks don't work properly!

it is nice, that when you go to an ad laden site, there's just a place holder where the ad should be, but one site I went to, did still pop up with "we notice you're using adblocking software..." so it's a bit pointless at the moment :(

I think this is the point.  The content providers do their best but once the oversaturation of ads on a site becomes too intrusive, then it really isn't worth the hassle.

I also don't see the point of targeted ads.  They would be fine if they made recommendations on things I might like based on previous purchases but I'm fed up of seeing ads that have been taken directly from my Amazon view history (and in many cases also bought).  How silly is that?
