"The next step can only be prohibition."

Which worked out so well in the USA.
If you criminalise it you just add another product to your average drug dealers menu. Which, if you take that view of things, makes it a gateway to their other products.
Far better to continue to make it more socially unacceptable/inconvenient.
ie: no smoking on busy pavements, public parks etc except in little corralled off areas.

I don't think prohibition would work either. :/ I think the answer to further reducing usage may be to reduce the places that can sell them.

If they weren't available from supermarkets and newsagents, that might reduce the convenience factor enough to reduce things further.

Isn't that essentially the same thing though?

I suspect that would just lead to illicit tobacco trafficking and maybe also loose cigarette selling, which I seem to recall led to the death of Eric Garner in the US back in 2019 at the hands of police trying to enforce the law.  Yes, that's an extreme example but it actually happened.

There's dodgy dealings with cigarettes and tobacco now, well maybe not right now, but ppl bringing in loads from overseas to sell down the pub.

It's been a while, but I remember at uni there was often kids hanging around the shop asking us to get them cigarettes.

This seems a nice idea in theory, but I don't see it making any difference.

The kids who hang around in parks late at night will be comitting 2 crimes that will go unpunished.

Did putting the shutters down so you can't see the cigarettes make a difference? Maybe some ppl forgot to buy them as they didn't see them but just made an extra trip?

yeh, the bloke who used to sit next to me at work smoked, I'd turn his tobacco over so I didn't see the picture as I walked past!

I remember an old house mate did one of the seminars about giving up smoking, the talker started off by saying something like "there's no point me telling you how bad it is for your health or how expensive it is, you know that, so that won't help you give up"

Not really, it would still be legal to buy them, but it becomes a lot more effort. Pornographic magazines have gone the same way, they used to be available in most newsagents and now they aren't. Whilst yes, the internet has replaced people's desire to buy them, this happened long before I think.

All the evidence on smoking points to people starting too young, which was why they started hiding them, but I'm not sure that made much of a difference and possibly made them more alluring to younger eyes.

The only other thing I can think of, would be taxing the hell out of the companies which make money from smoking. So there is no money in it. Effectively this becomes like an environmental tax, your company causes this much cost to the country, so now you have to pay for it. Much in the same way football clubs have to pay for policing.

Although I'm not sure there's the appetite for that internationally, I would agree that this is a better approach...

Looks like there might be a more imperative addiction to deal with than smoking at this point...
