Is 3D Cinema still popular?

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Friday, 20th April 2012, 17:13

I notice 2D is making a comeback in our local cinema, as people desert 3D due to either cost or by having sore eyes. The number of 2D `digital projection` films exceed 3D.

I gave up 3D after Avatar, as this film was full of depth and worth it in 3D, but other 3D films tend to have a few seconds thrill of `something jumping out towards you`, and was not really worthwhile for all that extra cash for 3D.

Now our local multiplex charge £2 extra each for 3D films, and another £2 if you do not have your own 3D glasses. I am happy now to return to watching 2D films like the recent `Battleship`.

It all adds up if you take two adults and two children.

What do you think ?

I`ll be glad to see the back of 3D - really good when used properly with Avatar the only real example I can think of that I`d seen, otherwise I was forced to watch the 3D option due to there not being any 2D showings at night (ie Thor which the 3D added nothing to) - though 2D is bloody expensive enough!

I wonder if years ago ppl moaned if they had to pay extra for colour films at the cinema, and if they did for surround sound, or were they just phased in as new tech?

I like 3d when it`s done well, Avatar, Jackass 3D, Toy Story 3d spring to mind as films where I think the extra couple of quid I spent on each ticket was well spent, but there`s films like Saw 3d, Alice in Wonderland where it wasn`t worth the extra, actually 2d would have been a waste on those 2 :(

We have got a latest generation LG Passive Cinema 3D TV and I am also a Cineworld Unlimited card holder. Since we got the TV, I prefer watching 3D at home as the cinema never manages to produce a decent 3D image.

I never got around to seeing it but Hugo was said to have had fantastic 3D, I`ll be picking the 3D Bluray up for the kids who love the 3D TV.

I have a Lazy eye so 3D is wasted on me, if i go to the cinema on my own it`s got to be 2D but i don`t mind sitting through a 3D showing when we go as a family. Next week we`ll be off to see Avengers Assemble and pick up all of these while i`m there:

Our TV is passive so the Real D glasses work at home.

I`ve never yet been to a cinema to watch a movie in 3D and don`t have any plans to. I really don`t think I`d like wearing those glasses for more than maybe 15 mins, which I have done at both Legoland and The London Eye Experience. That`s enough for me to be honest.

Anyway, these days the only cinema that gets my custom is our local digital 2D screen at Hawkhurst, and obviously they don`t have the facilites to show 3D versions of movies, so the temptation simply isn`t there.

our eldest (4) went to see Lion King 3D... she took glasses off after 5 minutes, and wouldn`t watch it with them on!

I think theatrical 3D was a smokescreen. It was just to sell people on the idea when all the money is going to be spent on Home 3D. If Hollywood had been seriously thinking about 3D as a saviour for theatrical cinema, they`d have insisted on manufacturers NOT making Home 3D tvs available and they wouldn`t be flogging 3D Blu-rays.

Problem now is that many cinemas have bought the 3D two projector system which has cost them a lot of money, and they do want to claw it back from customers, hence the rise in cinema ticket prices irrespective of watching 3D or 2D films, since the introduction of 3D.

The Real 3D setup uses a single projector alternating polarized left and right eye images at up to 144Hz rather than two projectors, so the system is completely compatible with normal film presentation and will be able to present higher-refresh-rate movies like Peter Jackson`s Hobbit without breaking a sweat. The higher ticket prices are more a case of profiteering from public interest than trying to cover costs.
