Has the threat of SOPA stopped you acquiring certain things?

Putting aside the legalities it is clear that many people on here have indulged in the acquisition of things via a friendly bittorrent site or two. I was just wondering if people had changed their habits now with the impending SOPA stuff?

Without wanting to derail the discussion before it starts, isn`t SOPA a US thing?

Yes, and I thought it had been defeated? Did I read it wrong?

Nope...the little man at the market selling 10 dvds for £20 stopped me :)

I use one of those USB dongle thingys rather than normal internet so only have 15gb available a month...also, I really can`t be faffed with all the finding a decent copy and downloading and stuffs, so when the man appeared it just made it easier :)

It`s more a question of stuff being withdrawn under threat of SOPA than being discouraged myself. I don`t download - I`d rather have a proper copy on disc rather than download some potentially dodgy file over Bittorrent. Theoretically I might consider downloading stuff that isn`t available on disc - i can`t sympathise with the Studios if they can`t be arsed to release a title properly.

The problem with SOPA was that it consolidated powers for the US Attorney General to chase copyright infringers both in the US and abroad.  As things stand, the US only has to ask for the deportation of a UK subject to face charges in the US and the likelihood is the Government will hand the suspect over quite happily - the Richard O`Dwyer case being in point.  SOPA, had it not stalled, would have probably made it easier to extradite him and landed him with a bigger sentence if found guilty.

I don`t think SOPA is finished.  I think Hollywood will throw more money at politicians to get the bill revived and ultimately passed.  I think big business in America has its sights set on taking over the internet for its own agenda and driving illegal content off the internet is the first move in that agenda.  Eventually they will have the internet sanitised to their satisfaction, and in that internet there will only be room for individuals as consumers.  No P2P, no "fan sites", no file-sharing forums.  If they survive, sites like this one will have to mind their Ps and Qs in dealing with the Studios (as many do already).  There are a lot of Film/DVD forum sites out there where a topic like this would have been deleted and Bezza banned for asking the question.
