My Dad`s self-built Art Deco Cinema

Hi all!

My father has recently completed construction on his art deco styled cinema. Was mostly done on weekends over the space of half a year, and is really fantastic. If there`s a feature I don`t get to see in the cinema, I`ll buy the Blu-ray and watch it here, because the experience is amazing.

A quick note before you check the pics - since the photos were taken, my father`s built a dedicated (shabby chic) style shelving unit, so I need to get some stills of those. Apart from a few other tweaks here and there this is pretty much how it looks!

I can`t remember the tech we`ve got running there, but off the top of my head it includes:
PS3, Denon Amp, Sky HD, Separate Amp powering the Sub-Woofer, Toshiba HD DVD Player, Asrock ion Home Cinema PC (with BD player), Sanyo HD Projector

There`s about 7 speakers, including 3 (I think) behind the screen (which is built for allowing sound through). The curtains are electric, and look really great. The seats came from Copenhagen Chairs (Denmark) and are beautifully made and really cheap in comparison to everywhere else we looked. They did take several months to be built and delivered however.

The games room (with the snooker, pinball etc. in) looks better lit up in the evening, so you`ll just have to use your imagination! There`s also a small monitor, built behind a photo frame, that you`ll see. This is wired in to the HTPC so we can watch stuff in that room (including full movies, trailers etc.). There`s also speakers dotted around the room too for music to accompany the snooker playing.

And yes, I know there`s one oddity in there - the R2-D2 bin. Its not in there all the time, but is very good for collecting popcorn boxes and sweet wrappers! ;)

Does his organ - sorry - does an organ come up through the floor playing tunes during the intermission? ;)

Very nice! I want a pinball machine. :( MAME can give me many things, but it can`t give me the feel of a proper pinball machine. :/

Do you get to shout at people eating popcorn too loud?

wow, that`s very cool.

I got introduced to art deco when we went to Napier, New Zealand. The town was destroyed in an earthquake in the 30s so when it was rebuilt a lot of it was built in that style, and they`ve kept it that way :)

Are you gonna do some silly adverts for the local takeaway/taxi firm/jewellers?

There`ll be footballers bugging him for one when they see this.

Top job..........I`m dead jealous Mr F!

Haven`t the space or the wherewithall to turn a room into an Art Deco style cinema (would if I could but I can`t), but I`m seriously tempted to build the telly a cardboard movie-theatre facade to try to get the same flavour.

Having said that, in the 1970s/80s, we had the front room set up as a real cinema when we watched 8mm digest prints of movies like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Superman The Movie.  The screen hung in the archway between the front room and living room, we had (still have) wall lights on dimmers and a friend of Dad`s had mugged up a piece of circuitry so that I could feed sound from the extension speaker jack on the projector to the stereo.  Not quite DTS, but it gave the sound enough oomph to cover the clatter of the projector.  Ideally I could have done with a soundproof booth, but Mum would have put her foot down.

Ah memories...
