Can I just bung a Ram Stick my motherboard

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Thursday, 23rd July 2009, 06:15

After a bit of a cock-up at PC world, i`ve discovered that my motherboard can only accept DDR 184-pin memory Sticks. Sadly, the mark-up between DDR2 and DDR is bloody ridiculous. I`ve spotted a few online but I`m loath to buy something like this online in case it`s wrong and don`t really want to go through the hassle of returning it.

Is there anything specific I should look for? (apart from memory size- looking at 512). I`m using a gateway desktop PC. XP, Intel P4

It sounds like you know what your machine can take but double check

http://www.crucial.com/uk/

that should tell you what you currently have, so buy more that meets the description of what you have. Crucial.com are competitively priced, I bought ram from there as it may have been slightly more expensive than the likes of ebuyer ( I do means literally £1 or £2 ) but if you use their scanner, you have their guarantee it`s compatible.

Third that for Crucial, I ran their programme check on my laptop, bought the recommended memory of 2 further gig & now my photo programmes are super fast instead of very sluggish. I went from 2 gig to 4 gig. Memory arrived in a couple of days & took a couple of minutes to fit.

I fourth that for Crucial, but when it comes up with the recommended items, have a look at the "all compatible memory" as there are sometimes better deals to be had from them.

Stantz, run the crucial checker and find out what speed etc it can take.
I might be able to get some from a mate for you, or run something like siSoft Sandra to find out the motherboard (unless you know it already) and get it`s manual to state RAM type and speed.

Crucial - Then check Play`s prices - Upped my tablet PC to 2Gb for about £17 last year.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Heartily glad that I don`t have to learn how to spell Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Visited Play this morning, 512 costs about £13 so upping to a gig shouldn`t be that much more.

Cheers again. you guys are fab

EDIT

Just noticed this bit

Quote:
Q: Do I have to install matching pairs?

A: Yes.

Your system requires that you install memory in pairs.

Is this ABSOLUTELY essential, or will adding just one chipset do any damage?
