Futurama - The End is nigh (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

Stranger Danger (Competent) posted this on Monday, 11th August 2003, 18:30

After 72 glorious episodes, Futurama comes to an end next Sunday on Sky 1 - it`s going out with a double bill which will be preceded by a new episode of The Simpsons. I still don`t know whether to be happy that it`s ending while at it`s peak or gutted that we`re losing such a classic. Oh well come November I`ll have the lot on DVD :D

it pretty much ended about 18 months ago - Fox has treated the show really badly in the US by putting it in terrible time slots. The rumour about Cartoon Network may be related to the US where the show has been on for some time.

CN picked up Futurama for syndication in the US, as part of "Adult Swim" the late night arm of Cartoon Network and it quickly became their most-watched show.

CN simply doesn`t have the budget to cough up the $1m an-episode, which Futurama needs to exist.

We might have to hold out for the movie, which Matt Groening is hinting at.

The whole Fox Vs. Futurama thing came about because Fox hates the show, they wanted The Simpsons In Space, and when they tried to insist on "creative input" in the shows, Matt Groening and David X. Cohen told them to get lost. Since then, Fox had moved it to the 7pm "Deathslot" on Fox (often pre-empted by Football), and never aired a single commercial for it, nor promoted it in any way, shape or form.

It still managed to win an Emmy (for Season 3 Episode "Roswell That Ends Well") despite all this.

Thought I`d bump this back up. i was watching my shiny new S4 boxset yesterday afternoon, and on the commentary for "The Devil`s Hands Are Idle Playthings" it`s hinted quite strongly that more Futurama may be made for DVD-only releases. That`d be fab!

i cant believe this show finished, also i find it even harder to believe that family guy only had the 3 seasons when it is the funniest cartoon ever!

Wasn`t another reason for falling out that Mat Groening kept more control over Futurama than he did with Simpsons, since Fox made a lot of money out of him with Simpsons, so he tried to keep creative freedom with Futurama, and also own it outright so he got the lion`s share of profits.

I think Fox got fed up with that, wouldn`t play his game. Probably didn`t help all the digs he makes at them in Futurama and Simpsons.

I have no sources for the above but that`s what I remember from reading various interviews etc.

May explain why Simpsons is nowhere near so good as it used to be now.
