Your Worst Fashion Mistakes

wayne ker (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 3rd June 2003, 09:12

Been looking through some old photo`s and cannot believe some of the fashions me and my friends used to wear and think was cool:

Snow washed skin tight jeans
Mirrowed sun glasses
Adidas Shell Suit (black yellow and white)
White high top trainers
White socks
Baggy jumpers

One lad has just the back of his hair permed I think he copied Chris Waddle, nearly everyone has a least one ear ring not a stud but a big gold loop!! surely there are bigger fashion disasters out there please make me feel better!

Dayglow pink socks.
sleeveless T-shirts with those multicolor "paint" splatter on them. Funny I saw someone wearing one the other day.
Leather ties

No prizes for guessing what HaGGis was up to in the late `80s ;-)

Me, I`ve never really been *in* fashion, so I don`t have any big mistakes to look back on. It`s a bit of a mystery to me to be honest - what makes something look fantastic in 1983 but laughable 20 years later? I dunno.

Anyway, I`m perfectly happy with my £6 jeans and £3 T-shirts from Primark :-)

Mike

American flat top haircut with tramlines!

I went through a few years at achool as a rocker wearing nothing but black.

White trousers and really minging shirts for clubbing in. And the outfit for the discerning 90s clubber, grandad shirt and a waistcoat, mmmmmm nice!

I think soemtimes there are people that can carry off what everyone else thought were "fasion disasters". There was a lecturer at Uni who had a bootlace leather ti, yet looked exceedingly cool (not that I would ever wear one).

Bad things from me? Looking at some of my younger photos Paisley Shirts/T Shirts, Sleeveless T-Shirts, Skin Tight Jeans.

It`s funny how fashion changes. During my early teens in the early 90`s I wouldn`t have been seen dead in the old 80`s fashions. Nike and ADIDAS were THE things to be seen wearing. I wouldn`t have been seen dead in a pair of Gola trainers, but now I`ve just spent a few hours looking for a really cool pair of retro Gola trainers which are very cool. It won`t be long before we`re calling the stuff we wear today Retro!

As far as I can see, the fashion industry thrives on marketing garments that are deliberately ephemeral/impractical. Having said that, if consumers weren`t persistently persuaded that they should be ashamed to `be seen` in last season`s designs, most Western economies would probably collapse.

I agree with Mike that there`s really no such thing as a fashion "mistake". If anyone seriously thinks that their current fashion choices won`t be deemed ridiculous in the near future, they`re very much mistaken. Fashion is all a big ruse to part gullible people from their money.
