The Warriors (1979 film?)

RJS (undefined) posted this on Friday, 4th March 2011, 12:54

So I`m looking at this top 50 list of opening credits here and I get to number 12, and it`s The Warriors which I`ve never heard of or seen, but start watching the video (below) and I hear the music.

And the music makes me immediately think of The Prodigy and **** The Law, even though it`s sort of one note out.

But then I get past that and watch each of the gangs, and couldn`t help burst out laughing when the Mime gang turns up. Oh my, why are they scarey? Surely they just pretend to stab or shoot you?

Anyways, by the end I`m intruiged and wondering what the whole film is about, and if it`s worth a watch. Anyone seen it?

I actually hadn`t seen this until the early 00`s when my mate was saying can`t believe you haven`t seen it.

Always see it mentioned everywhere since as Cult game (there was a PS2 game released that looked pretty good).

Always thought it was a mid 80`s film though.

The Warriors is an excellent film, obviously a cult classic and not really a mainstream movie, but really watchable nevertheless.
If you like that, check out Enzo Castellari`s The Bronx Warriors, Escape from the Bronx and The New Barbarians which Shameless released in a rather swanky looking tin.

maybe this is a good time to admit I own a baseball furies baseball shirt :B

Its a great film! I dont think its dated that badly to be fair.the subject of gangs and gang violence is pretty much timeless, yeah it looks like a film made in the 70`s cos it was er...made in the 70`s. I dont think I was in my teens when I got my first copy on VHS, and its become one of those films that I seem to quote lines from, along with a workmate lol .

The `ultimate directors cut` of the film adds a few transitional elements - comic book style points in the film that at first I didnt like but on reflection they are ok, as they dont change the film as such. There was talk of a remake set in the present time with contemporary gangs not as `comicbookish` as the ones in the Warriors I dont know if its ever got past the rumor stage

As far as the film goes its a simple story, I`ll try and explain without giving anything away, theres a huge meeting of all the gangs, someone gets shot and the Warriors get the blame, they then become public enemy number one and have to bet back to Coney Island (Their `turf`) while trying to avoid all the other gangs who are out looking for them. The film is based on a novel from the mid 60`s which itself was based on/influenced by Xenophon's `the Anabasis`

Id say give it a go, for a fiver you cant go wrong...

Be lookin good Warriors. all the way back to Coney :D

I`ve not seen it since the 80`s when it was a bit of a video nasty, but have fond memories of it.  My son had the PS2 game and asked me to pick up a cheap copy of the film on DVD when he realised what was based on.  It`s now his favourite film.

Deffo a cult classic, whether that means you`ll like it is a different matter but it`s meant to depict the future rather than be an accurate portrayal of gang life...

I vaguely remember seeing it at a smoke-filled flea-pit of a cinema in the Midlands. All I can remember is someone creeping around calling out for the Warriors in a spooky voice. I can hear it now: `Warriors! Oh Worry-ahhhhs`.
