OK, I was having a well mannered debate (fuming argument) with someone before about M Night Shyamalan. Personally, I would say he`s a great director who hasn`t really made any truly bad films.

The only one I`m not too keen on is The Sixth Sense, which just bored me senseless from start to finish (but then I had already heard about the twist, which I suppose kind of ruined the mystery).

That said, I loved The Village and Signs, and am quite fond of Unbreakable. I`m also really, really looking forward to Lady In The Water.

My friend, on the other hand, hates everything he`s done and thinks he`s the biggest hack director working today.

So, how would you rate him as a director?

I thought the Sixth Sense was ok, didnt deserve all the hype and didnt live up to it for me, Stir of Echoes which came out around the same time with a similar kinda feel to it was a much better film and sadly overlooked by many.

I found Unbreakable to be tedious beyond measure...Unwatchable is more like it. Id not seen signs until it was on the TV and that too was long...dull...and at the end of it I just thought ..meh..ok..that was it was it? I avoided the Village on the strength of his other films untill in a moment of weakness and boredom borrowed it from my mum...If it was a choice of watching that pile of s***e again or spend 2 hours sticking pins into my eyes, its the pins everytime :/ If I never se an M Night Shamalamadingdong film again it will be too soon....as for lady in the water ...Ive seen the trailer and it looks like a yellow pages advert :¦

Ive gotta agree with your friend, hes a hack of titanic proportions >:(

Very true, agree 100%.

But I think Shyamalan is a gifted filmmaker. He can make great films. I adore Unbreakable, it`s just immensely brilliant, such a huge departure for a "comic book" film. Signs is funny and freaky, but has an awful ending. The Village phoned it`s ending in at the beginning simply by being a Shyamalan flick. Sixth Sense is good too, but you know, I`ve only seen it that one time in the cinema.

I`m curious about Lady in the Water.

He should be in the water, preferably with lead weights attached to his ankles.

The Sixth Sense is a funny film.....first time you watch you are amazed by the twist....but on repeated viewing you......
SPOILER:
wonder how he didnt realise he was dead especially when other people didnt interact with him

Thinking about it would I have needed a spoiler for a 7 year old film? Especially one whose twist has been well over exposed??? :/

Edit :- For the record I voted `crap`!! 8)

....did you know Darth Vader is really Luke Skywalker`s father!? Shocking, I know.... ;)

As for MNS:

Sixth Sense - very average
Unbreakable - excellent
Signs - good
The Village - ok, but far too predictable

....so overall, I voted "good". I didn`t know the twist in "Sixth Sense" - but I knew that there was one. And that`s all it takes sometimes - once you know there is one, you`re looking for it and in SS, it became pretty obvious (same with "The Village").

I think now though, people will be expecting twists or looking out for them in his movies - so maybe he has done away with them....?

I think he`s excellent. Unbreakable is one of the best "superhero" films ever made.

I was just reading about Lady in the Water last night in Empire (article, not review) and I really like the sound of that too. He said ages ago that he knew he would be critically slated for it, and that`s exactly what`s happened.

I`ve loved all of his movies, and can`t be cynical about the guy at all.

All his films would basically work better as an hour long anthology episode, instead of stretching it over two hours.

Sixth Sense was the only film of his that I thought was good, the rest ranged from mediocre to down right s***.

I put average because he`s obviously a very gifted filmmaker, who has just made some really bad films - aside from The Sixth Sense, which I managed to see without knowing the twist, I have hated the rest of his films and I`m quite looking forward to Lady In The Water, as it seems to be more of a `fairytale` film and (I think) one without a twist.
