RE: Best Man Speech

The best best man speech I ever heard contained the following gag:
`Ladies and gentlemen, you may not know this, but the groom (insert his name) almost didn`t make it to his own wedding. Until yesterday, he was seriously ill in hospital suffering from premature ejaculation; indeed, some of the nurses told me that it was touch and go there for a while.`
Even the assembled parents of the bride and groom laughed hard at that one.

RE: Going to Liverpool on Friday.....Any suggestions???

the cavern is a fake - the original was knoked down in the 70`s; avoid The Grafton club - a non-liverpudlian once described it (accurately) as the cantina scene from Star Wars; if you need cheap booze check out Slater`s in Slater Street: it`s as rough as toast but you won`t find cheaper drink; if you have time, check out the new FACT cinema, one of the few things we have in our favour as far as capitals of culture go.
And wherever you are from, if you can laugh at yourself you will do fine.

RE: Medion MD40814 DivX Multi-region DVD player for £49

has it arrived yet? what`s it like? I`m thinking of getting one, but I`d like to know if it plays avi files or just div-x.
Cheers

RE: Can anyone help with this TV episode

it rings a vague bell as a tale of the unexpected episode, but not sure

RE: Jobs Abroad

I can`t recommend the site as I have never used it, but I picked up their flyer in a hostel in madrid recently, so what the hell:
www.anyworkanywhere.com

If you find anything good let me know - I wouldn`t mind getting out of this dump myself

RE: At the risk of starting an argument !!!!!!!!

Just a quick point on what was said above: `It will also come as a surprise that many scientists are deeply religious people. Or in
other words, they believe in God until his/her existence is disproven. And there is no
evidence to date to disprove that.`

What would count as evidence and/or proof of god`s existence or non-existence? (No one, neither scientist, philosopher, nor cleric, has successfully defined `existence` yet for that matter!)

All arguments for and against god`s existence are fatally flawed, which is why people have to fall back on the vagueness of `faith`, and I don`t mean that in an insulting way - people also have the deluded faith/belief that England will win the world cup every time it comes around, regardless of the evidence to the contrary - but miracles do happen :)

RE: Can anyone recommend a good optician?

Join Costco if there is one near you - eye tests for a tenner and cheap glasses and contacts - I found huge savings there.

RE: At the risk of starting an argument !!!!!!!!

Just thought I`d throw my tuppence worth in:
A great man once existed and was loved by many. After his death, those who loved him spread far and wide and attempted to act like him, live like him, and even look like him. Whenever they were gathered together in one place to share their feelings of love for this man, scorn was poured upon them and people laughed at their `ridiculous` chanting and prancing.
Many years later, that man`s church was stronger than ever. And his name? Elvis.

And as far as religion causing violence and war, I have to say that, much as I loath organised (or any kind of) religion, people would fight about nearly anything else if religion didn`t exist. People regularly come to blows over which football/rugby/any-sport-you-like team is better.
It is people and the way people choose to hold and defend their beliefs that is the problem, not the beliefs themselves.

As for science being unprovable and constantly open to re-examination, fine. It may be a groundless system of beliefs just like Christianity or Islam, but it has cured disease, provided us with computers, electricity, etc, and increased the quality of life and life expectancy of a larger number of people than religion ever could.

Also, if Jesus existed and is indeed the only salvation available, and willingly welcomes all those who give themselves to him, what about all the poor suckers who lived and died before he did? Or the billions of Chinese who had never even had the chance to convert until Western sailors showed up in the 16th century? Seems a bit unfair for god to send his son down to earth to save mankind in an era with no mass communications and when one side of the world didn`t know the other side even existed.

This argument will go nowhere as faith, true or otherwise, is pretty much unassailable in theists and atheists alike. I`ll just end by saying: freewill - use it or lose it.

RE: New books needed...suggestions?

I`ve just finished Mark `Chopper` Read`s first one: `Chopper` and am currently reading the follow up: `Chopper 2: How to Shoot Friends and influence People`. Both very funny in a scary, brutal kind of way.
I can also recommend `17 Watts` by Mo Foster for all the musos out there.

What model did u get from Maplins and how much was it?

Decoding a car radio

Hi,
Can anyone help me? I was fiddling about with my Ford Fiesta today and when I came to drive it again I found the car radio had reset itself (as I had disconnected it at one point). Unfortunately, this car is at least third hand, so I don`t know the code. I`ve had a look on the net but can only find decoding services, where if you email them the serial number of the radio they email u back the code - for a charge. To be honest, I`d rather buy a newer, better radio than pay someone for an email. It`s a Ford Sound 2000 and I can assure you this is a genuine request (you only have to look up how old this radio is to see it`s not worth nicking.)
Cheers

RE: Best guitar solo?

I always thought Bakithi Kumalo`s `bass solo` on `You Can call Me Al` was a backwards solo (like George Harrison`s on `I`m Only Sleeping`). Not knocking the lad, just pointing it out.
I am of the mind, where guitar solos are concerned (or any other instruments for that matter), that studio stuff usually sucks compared to live stuff. For example, BB King, the greatest blues guitarist of all time has always disappointed me on studio recordings (tone wise), but live he is awesome. Similarly, I would say that Freebird, although not technically perfect live, is much better than the blistering studio version.
Brian May`s another one: his studio stuff is faultless, but his live stuff is exciting with a more improvised feel.
The live guitar solo on `Still in Love with You` by Thin Lizzy (if it wasn`t re-recorded in the studio like a lot of the rest of the album) even gets a round of applause like a jazz break.
Also, i think discussion like this, though interesting, are brought on by the endless list making in magazines like Q, and ultimately get you nowhere.
By the way, Joe Satriani may know every scale in the book but he hasn`t got an ounce of soul. He was the Hank Marvin of the 90s. (let`s see the backlash that creates!)

Music question (Michael Jackson and rap)

Hi,
Does anyone know the title/name of the rap version of Michael Jackson`s `Don`t Stop till You Get Enough` (from the `Off the Wall` album). Heard it in a club the other night and loved it.
Cheers

RE: Rio Riot 20GB Jukebox, over half price off!

now shoiwing as 249 quid at argos - they seem to have upped the price

free newsgroup servers

Anyone know of any good newsgroup servers that are free? The one I usually use through telewest has suddenly dried up. Cheers

NASA font

Hi, does anyone know what font NASA use for their logo (the one where the `A` is just an upturned curvy `V`), and where I can get it from? Thanks in advance.

RE: International / World Cinema DVD`s

www.dddhouse.com has all kinds of wierd and wonderful stuff - don`t be fooled by their front page: it`s not all martial arts. I have had two orders from them now - very fast indeed.
The only minor problem I have with their dvd`s is that the English subtitles are not always of the highest quality, but varies: Rejkyavik 101 subtitles were fine, but a Brazilian movie I got had pretty poor English subtitles.
Best of luck

RE: What would you put in Room 101

The BBC (I disagree with the license fee and its endless repeats);
People who wear tracksuits and do NO sport;
Price fixing CD and DVD manufacturers;
Pop Idol;
Big Brother;
All reality tv shows for that matter.

RE: X Men united

It may be apocryphal (spelling?) but apparently the american producer who Ken Brannagh went to with the Henry V script thought it was a sequel and was quite offended that Brannagh hadn`t offered him Henrys 1 to 4 :)

RE: Scummy b*stard shoplifters

I always advise people who have a problem with the criminal element after the 5pm lazy copper cut off point to say that they aren`t sure, but they may have seen the junkie scum holding what looked like a gun. Armed response units will be there in a matter of minutes, and when it turns out all the junkie has is a pocket load of your property you just say that you THOUGHT he had a gun and it`s better to be safe than sorry etc.
I know van loads of overweight coppers who have seen SWAT too many times can be mighty disruptive to a busy DVD type shop, but they are all blokes (mainly), so they will probably end up buying some DVDs while they are there. (And they absolutely LOVE the practice they get.)

Dark Star

Anyone know where I might get a reasonable priced copy of this DVD? Amazon are selling it for 17 quid and cdwow and dddhome haven`t got it. Neither has dvdsoon or play.
Cheers

RE: Clown hip hop

There were that many `posses` mentioned that I can`t be sure about the Insane one - they all looked insane to me, and not one of them was put together by the sheriff for the purpose of tracking down escaped criminals.

Clown hip hop

Did anyone else see the apparent documentary on clown dancing on Channel 4 tonight? If so, I`d like to hear whether or not you believed it. I couldn`t help thinking it was an elaborate fake with a hint of the Spanal Taps about it, but I suppose nothing should surprise me anymore.
As Frank Skinner once said: `There are two words which, when placed at the beginning of a sentence, make anything that follows them completely believable; and those two words are: "In America".`

RE: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

The graphic novel should be available from Forbidden Planet i think

RE: Car Breakdown/Recovery

I have to agree: if you have access to more than one car, a deal that covers you rather than a specific vehicle has got to be the best to go for, especially as breakdown recovery prices are pretty similar no matter where you go. I was with green flag for a while because of their links with TSB, but changed to the AA when another car came into the family. I think the AA are regarded as highly as they are because they have provided a quality service for so many years.

RE: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

I actually preferred the cgi of Hyde to that of the Hulk (maybe Alan Moore was pointing out the historical precedent there, and having a swipe at Stan Lee?). I also loved how he linked so many things from the period, e.g. Mr Hyde as the murderer in the Rue Morgue, Moriarty as M, head of a prototype secret service (and then ex Bond Connery gets the lead part), and also endowing Dorian Gray with an altogether different kind of immortality than Wilde probably had in mind.
I thought Nemo`s car was pushing it a bit though :)
I had been putting off buying the graphic novel, but if the film is anything to judge by the book is probably even better.

RE: DVD Reviews - How about some Asian cinema?

I warn you now: as far as Audition and Irreversible are concerned, I hope you have a strong stomach. Both films are utterly shocking in parts but not gratuitously in my opinion. Also, Irreversible has a beautiful side which is absolutely charming.

RE: DVD Reviews - How about some Asian cinema?

I gladly second the suggestion - especially as I was browsing King of Comedy at dddhome today and couldnt find a decent review on imdb.com. (I can now order it quite happily.)
I took delivery of 7 dvd`s from dddhome today so I`ll post reviews of what I can if anyone wants me to.
Just a question Jonpy: where did you buy King of Comedy? My only worry with dddhome dvds is that as their stock naturally originates in asia, are the English subtitles up to scratch? I watched Twin Dragons today (first one out of the box) and the English subtitles were terrible.I know this isn`t so important with action flicks, but with something like Battle Royale or Audition it could render the film unintelligible.

RE: WHAT FILM HAS THE BEST CAR CHASE

Even though I love The Italian Job, and am a mini owner myself, I have to say that I prefer The Bourne Identity for pure adrenalin and speed. I see the Italian Job as more of a beautifully choreographed series of stunts and `bits`. The minis arent even being chased by anyone in a lot of the sequences (e.g. sewer pipe).
