Can anyone help with this TV episode

It was broadcast during the 1970`s (probably late 70`s) and would have been on ITV. It was a one-off drama.

Plotline: a wealthy guy comes home from a long business trip to find his house burgled and not only that but vandalised and carpet p***ed on etc. In a rage he plans to catch the burgler and erects a huge cage like structure which traps him when he tries to burgle him again a few months later. I remember the burgler had a knife which he tried to pick the cage lock with but the owner got it off him and stuck it in the floor just out of his reach as a torment. He then told him he was going away on business for 6 weeks or so and basically left the burgler to starve in the cage unable to escape.

Does this ring any bells with anyone? I though it might have been Brian Clemens Thriller series but nothing in the episode guide matches this plot. Tales of The Unexpected perhaps? Great story though .

Try asking here if no-one knows:

The Mausoleum Club

A poster helped me out with something that had been driving me mad for years (been asking online over and over for over 5 years), and even sent me a tape of it!

They *really* know their stuff.

Brian Clemens Thriller series

That rings a few bells....

The exchange student who is raped, but keeps "seeing" her attacker & killing inocent men....I think that one was called "Screamer".

The ghost of abused dolphin in a abandoned indoor exhibition hall & the worker that was sacked for trying to ease its life, commiting suicide.

The couple in a country cottage under siege (as indeed the whole country) by intelligent rats, running upstairs in fencing gear to protect their faces as the rats break through.

Those are the ones I remember just off the top of my head.

"Thriller" had some great episodes - ripe for a DVD re-release I think

Their was a very vaguely similar ep in Tales of The Unexpected.

A man kills his mate in the army (I think) and then deserts. Visits mates parents and stays with them, the couple kind of adopting him as a surrogate son.
Realising he is a deserter, and the army may come looking at his mate house the father secretly builds a room in the cellar for him to hide in with a one way intercom so once inside he can hear whats happening in the cellar.

While showing him the secret room explaining he can hide their if the MP`s come looking for him. He shuts him in so he can see its sound proof and has no door release on the inside in case he came out by accident while the MP`s were still their.

The sting in the tail comes now as the old couple fall to the floor dieing, the man having poisoned their food before hand. Intending to kill them and steal from them.

The MP`s/Police arrive to find the dead couple, but despite his cries and banging the soundproof room holds its secret. As the body`s of the couple are taken away the murderer is left to his fate. To stave to death in the secret room built to keep him safe!

That one was definately a "Thriller" one, I think the Father had a image of his dead son on some form of TV right at the start & its a recurring theme as I beleive the father leaves some form of cardboard cutout effigy of his dead son in the deserters room to which he wakes up to one morning.

Another Thriller memory just came & went alas, no doubt it will come back later, when my mind is looking the other way. ;)

Tales of the Unexpected had similar themed tale, a rich husband who continually plays on his wifes extreme fear of being late.

The couple are going to 2 different destinations by air, he goes back into the house as yet another delaying tactic, when he doesnt come out she goes to the front door & hears him calling out, for the first time in her married life, she stands up for herself & gets in the car, instructing the driver to take her to the airport.

On her return six weeks later she finds the corpse of her husband in the houses lift, which had gotten stuck between floors.
