Harry Callahan is a tough, streetwise San Fransisco cop whom they call Dirty Harry. In this action classic, you`ll see why - and also why Clint Eastwood`s reputation as a premier film star and movie maker is secure.

A rooftop sniper (Andy Robinson) calling himself Scorpio has killed twice and holds the city ransom with the threat of killing again. Harry will nail him... one way or the other - no matter what the `system` prescribes.

Filming on location, director Don Siegel made the City by the Bay a vital part of Dirty Harry, a practice continued in its four sequels. The original remains one of the most gripping police thrillers ever made.

I first saw Dirty Harry in 1995 when I taped it off ITV and I thought it was a good police thriller which was worth repeated viewing. I saw this film again when I bought this DVD and I think that it`s still a great film even though it`s 30 years old now. I haven`t seen any of the other dirty harry films but I might check out one or two in the future.

The DVD is far superior to the previous bare bones edition.
The picture is excellent fpr a film this old and is better then other more recent films. The sound is also good has some fine moments.

The extras are also much improved. First thing is an original featurette from 1971, Dirty Harry`s Way. Although it`s only 7 minutes long, it does contain some behind the scenes footage and comparsions with other detective films. Next is a 30 minute documentary, Dirty Harry: The Original, which actually focuses on all five films. This is a very good documentary which is well worth further viewing. There is also 25 minutes of additonal interviews which contain even more insight into the films. Finally, there is the original 3 minute trailer. The main menu is static with part of the film`s score playing in the background.

Overall, this is a fine film which has been given the treatment it deserves. Worth purchasing on its own or as part of the box set.

One of the greatest and most important films ever made, Dirty Harry stands tall after all these years. The film hasn`t dated (apart from some dodgy 70`s haircuts), that`s because of the script that piles on the suspense and action, Don Siegel`s peerless direction and Clint Eastwood`s performance.

The French Connection may have won the Oscars in 1971, but Dirty Harry`s influence is longer.
