    Review of Manhunter

    8 / 10

    Introduction

Studio Canal, who must have gained the distribution rights to this movie in Europe, have jumped on the bandwagon to cash in on Lector fever. This version should not be confused with the MGM/Anchor Bay region 1 release due in October, as this disc contains only the theatrical release and very few extras.
Many argue that this movie, based on Thomas Harris` novel "The Red Dragon," is either superior or inferior to Silence of the Lambs.
Many will spit if you dare mention Hannibal in the same sentence, I`m one, but I believe this movie stands alone and strong. It fails in parts to deliver the gore on body count of "Silence" but still chills with the same affect in select moments. Mann`s direction dates the film greatly with his use of locations and music, but on a whole the film manages to deliver a taught, tense drama with the help from a great supporting cast and an awe inspiring tiger.

    Video

Much has been muted about the state of the director`s cut for this movie, but this disc contains only the original theatrical release. Framed in 2:35:1 anamorphic widescreen this pressing is pin sharp with some basic animated menus. Colours are bold and vibrant at all times. Blacks are solid and whites strong and bright with very little edge enhancement. There is very little or no evidence of macro blocking or any digital artefacts.

    Audio

The Dolby Digital 5.1 track works well and gives the film a feeling of depth and realism. Surrounds are used to great effect for ambient and odd louder moments that do have some, but not distracting distortion. I had always wondered about the movies overall background noise, specially during the more talky moments. It now feel like this was a definite ploy to give the movie a gritty realistic edge, it works!

    Features

A short but not very informative documentary and a trailer.

    Conclusion

A great prequel to Silence of the Lambs and a good but not great disc. Real fans may want to wait and check out the region 1 disc as it offers more chills for your cash. I personally enjoy the movie enough to warrant this disc, with a top notch transfer its just let down by an under par soundtrack and lack of decent extras. Still it`s better than Hannibal...SPIT!
