Review for Being Erica Season one

    7 / 10

Being Erica is an interesting show, almost a mix of Quantum Leap and Christmas Carol with a little Back to the Future in the mix. Erica (Erin Karpluk) is a woman who thought she'd get the guy, the job, the perfect life. In fact she can't even keep a call centre job with a Masters and is dumped by her dentist boyfriend. On this say of disasters, she encounters Dr Tom (Michael Riley) a special type of therapist. He allows Erica the ability to go back in time and change one of her regrets from her life.
Of course the first episode feels a lot like watching a typical time travel show with the unbelievably clichéd cry of 'What year is it?' That being said, the only thing that is never explained (or not really) is the whole science or method behind the time travel. I am not saying I need a '1.21 Gigawatt' speech like Back to the Future but some explanation would be nice. The fact that the series blatantly ignore the consequences of changing things in the past would probably cause Ray Bradbury to die just so he could spin in his grave.
That being said, the program isn't as bad as I thought it might be and certainly doesn't fit the usual MO of the typical chick show and so it's not exactly going to be one of those shows that is aimed at just women. However, the stories are a little odd to say the least, with Erica's trips through time are never for anything really important and though I understand that people find significance in the smallest things the idea of basing a whole episode about whether she gets drunk at her prom is a little dull. Unlike shows like Quantum Leap or Tru Calling, the shows lacks a bit of excitement and at times it falls into the twee 'nice to watch, but too damn nice at times' that made Joan of Arcadia so pretentious at times.
The thirteen episodes are good enough in their own way, but I can't imagine myself watching it again and it's not exactly the type of program that offers the humour of Friends, the plot twists of Desperate Housewives or even (I shudder to say it) the characters of Sex and the City. But if you are looking for something that you don't need to think too much or maybe see yourself as someone who has missed chances in the past, this show may be the one for you.
