imo you currently have a choice of 2 players at the moment:

1) New Toshiba210 - problem is it is not multiregion so you would have to buy it from techtronics which comes chipped (this makes it multiregion and will turn off macrovision) price fully chipped approx £225
(see this months whatvideo for a superb review (10/10 for picture, 9/10 sound, 9/9 overall)

If you dont want a chipped player the next best thing is:::

2) Whalfedale M5 (to buy from `tescos` believe it or not) this costs approx £170 and is multiregion already, however if you want to remove macrovision you will then need to buy an adaptor such as: (www.sonel.com £25)

Both of the above players play cdr, mp3 etc etc and are currently the best on the market imo

As you say price is open, In my opinion the toshiba is the best player currently available, it is a real shame these don`t come with a remote hack for multiregion already so you didnt have to pay the extra to get them chipped.

(( Note:: some people on here do not seem to like techtronics, personally i know a few people that have bought there players and had no problems, so i am undecided on them.
I would be interested to hear from people on here that have bought from them and are happy, as i am now considering this tosh also??. - please dont reply if you dont like them, there are enough threads on this as it is!! :-)

I see that Richer Sounds are doing the Toshiba SD210 for £187.95, labelled as multiregion - presumably chipped. Not sure if it has macrovision disabled, though....

Totally ignore what i said about techtronics!!! lol

I have just read the new thread by mark which highlights that his problem with them is still ongoing and also importantly that a number of other people have also had problems with them. I didn`t realise the problems were so excessive.

I think the consensus is avoid techtronics them like the plague!!!

It depends on how muvh money you have to spend, budget wise, ALBA 104, multiregion, RCE friendly, excellent sound and picture and it`s got built in games, i like it. If your rich then go for the new pioneer model 717 I think

Hi,
I just went for a Pioneer HTZ 55DV (NS 55DV in Europe). It does all this plus DTS, DD 5.1 and any other sound combination with its speakers + sub. Also it has AM/FM radio and sounds very good for such a compact and reasonably priced system. I`m very happy with it and can recommend it over similar systems by Sony and Panasonic. The Pioneer sounds better and the image (S-Video to my 29 inch Sony, I use Cinema mode for DVDs) is better than my previous Pioneer DV 414.
It is also fast loading. For the disc itself and the menus, which on the DV 414 took some time. Now it`s almost instantaneous.
Worth a look at least.

I`ve got an Afreey LD-2060, it`s available through second spin for around £160

It`s true multiregion (not region 0 bypass) with macro disable allthrough the remote - so no chipping required or waranty issues.

It plays DVD, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, CD, MP3, and miniDVD and raw mpeg files (with firmware upgrade via CD rom file)

Has DTS 5.1 decoder & channel outs, optical & digital audio out, composite, single scart & RGB video outputs too!

It`s built around a DVD ROM drive, so very easy to upgrade the drive if required and firmware is easily upgradeable too.

Check out Clayts xxxcellant site www.area450.co.uk for more details.

Cheers

beware of the mico I have had one and it had many problems, inlcuding scratching discs, locking up and pieces falling of it.

many people have returned their`s.

my advice avoid it like the plague.
