John Wick
with poppadums

Counting up from watching the trailer just once.
Starting with an Apocalypse Now opening, I've spotted some
Once Upon a Time in the West
Lethal Weapon
Midnight Cowboy
The Equalizer
and maybe a bit of Wolverine.

None of which means it's a bad movie.

WOW!!! WOW!!! and WOW!!! again, its a freakin masterpiece that must be seen by as many people as possible , watching it I was thinking what a big risk this must have been for Dev Patel until I saw the credits, he wrote the story, worked on the screenplay and amazingly (given its 100% his movie, being in nearly every scene) directed it, and his direction made the movie.

So one minute its got an obvious Indian film feel which it is then switches to a John Wick revenge martial arts , then again an art house movie and is seamless in the transition which took a lot of planning I would imagine.

Now I love a good revenge flick but unlike JW this is definitely set in the grungy underground Indian city scape and the story which is the absolute best I can remember in a long time from the genre and steers clear of the obvious tropes used by many but shows in flashbacks (normally one of my pet peeves) just how he got to where he is and the fire passion despair and fury that drove him there.

The cast are magnificent and given the story they were given and how overwhelmingly it concentrates on Patels character they shine when given a chance. The bag guy was very bad and the one point I ended up scratching my head about didn't matter because he had gained enough good will for me to let it slide.

Blood and guts galore, some stylish fight scenes which possibly gravitated too far towards JW for my taste but some brutal ones also which I felt fit in more with the gritty background setting and characters. all in all absolutely my favourite film of the year so far and definitely WWAW just for Dev Patels astonishing performance
