What is the best antivirus software out there?

floyd_dylan (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 26th September 2007, 12:09

I`ve heard many times tht Norton is no good, so I`m wondering what is the best antivirus and also protects your computer from spywares etc.

I wouldn`t touch either Norton or McAfee with a bargepole, having been virused with both in the past.

It`ll be interesting to see which names come up (hoping to see some replies here). I really don`t know for sure which is best.

I did have Avast AntiVir (free version) running until about 6 months ago, but that didn`t protect against spyware. Then I had an opportunity to get a free upgrade on my ZoneAlarm firewall to full firewall/anti-virus/spyware, so I grabbed that. Seems OK, but normally you`d pay for that package.

But I still run SpyBot and Ad-Aware (both freebies) on a weekly basis as they all seem to find different spywares. It`s so annoying! >:(

AVG free. Excellent product, with pretty much daily updates. I use it in conjunction with Ad-Aware and HijackThis.

I use AVG Free and have done for around 6 years.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall, it isn`t free anymore (or discontinued altogether) but the last free version is available on oldversion.com/ and that is the same version as I have been using since it came out. Before that I used Zone Alarm which is still free, it`s just personal preference.

I use Ad-Aware and Spybot S+D (both free) to check for spyware. Edit: And I have HijackThis too.

Avast Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Spyware

I think AVG Anti-Virus is fine, but the last time I checked it didn`t support IMAP.

Thanks for all your help, I think it was common sense that made me want to look elsewhere, when Norton wanted to charge me £50-£100 to renew my antivirus.
