jean88 (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 18th November 2008, 19:18

May have been asked in the past but could not find anything in the search result (went through the 20 first pages). I am thinking to get an Ipod, what is the best legal site to download music? Thanks for any replies

If you`re buying an ipod then you can use iTunes (79p per track) or any site that does DRM free MP3 tracks. E.g. www.play.com

The ones from iTunes are linked to whatever account you buy them with, so will only work with that account. But they can be transferred to an ipod without too much hassle.

I can`t think of any others at the mo, in the US Amazon do MP3 tracks, but not sure if they do them here yet.

Pamph - they`re quite clearly asking for "legal" downloads...or was that just a post to get your site into the message?!

Hi Miles, thanks for the reply. What does it mean exactly when you say "The ones from iTunes are linked to whatever account you buy them with, so will only work with that account.", once I download a track to my PC, I should be able to load it onto my (future) ipod or existing mp3s I have got right now? Am I correct. Thanks

Basically you need to create an account within iTunes to buy anything.
Your username is usually an email address BTW.

When you buy a track (in M4P format, which is a protected AAC track - Google it ;)), its downloaded to your PC. In order to play that track (or transfer it to an ipod) on the PC then you need to register your iTunes account on that PC. You can register a maximum of 5 machines with the same account.

NOTE: If you start buying tracks from iTunes, then if you want to use them on a portable music player - it will need to be an iPod.

However, if you buy tracks from places like Play.com (which sell the DRM free "MP3" tracks) then you will be able to use them on pretty much any portable music player.
