Tosh BDX 1200 blu-ray player kaput - cheapo replacement recommends?

alfie noakes (Elite) posted this on Monday, 13th April 2015, 10:01

The tray has been a problem for a while, taking at least a few goes to get the thing to open. Yesterday it simply wouldn't open. So obviously I took the machine apart to fix it. Surely a simple mechanical fix? With my deft touch and great engineering skills I've definitely made sure it'll never work again.

Any road up, what's a good current budget player I can get in a hurry? Is it worth getting a 3d player just to future proof (no 3d telly as yet)?

Cheers.

If I was buying a budget player today I'd probably go with this £55 Sony job from Argos. It does everything I'd need of it including Network and USB reading plus Argos are usually pretty good if you ever need to return anything.

3D ones are cheap, you can get reconditioned ones under £80. Whether it's worth it depends I suspect on how far in the future you think you'll get a 3D TV.

Mind you, Richer Sounds are selling them for £50 with smart stuff (iplayer etc) so maybe just get one!

I had a cheap Sony that I was quite impressed with for the price.

we have one of the LG 3D BR players under our LG 3D telly,
it's got network and USB support, plays MKV's and a few other
file types too.

don't use it that much tbh, but it's a good little player.

i think i paid about £100 for it a couple of years ago from Currys.

Cheers guys.

Going to plump for the £50 LG BP440 in Richer Sounds. From the comments it seems they were selling them at £40 odd only recently! Why didn't I break my player a bit sooner?!

Can't see the difference between the LG BP440 and the BP325 but the Richer one is cheaper.

The BP440 can send the audio to a mobile device for 'private audio' and it can receive audio via Bluetooth. You don't usually get those features sub £100.

You can pick up 3D Panasonic players from Tesco for less than £60. If it were me I'd be going for one of those or possibly a Sony over anything else in the mid-range, but at the lower end end of the market I doubt there's too much in it.

I did go for the LG. All setup and working fine, the tray goes in-and-out which is also a bonus. They did try to flog me a smart tv one for a tenner more but I really don't need any more ways to watch iPlayer (and this one has enough smart functions anyway).
