It`s new TV time...

Gavski (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 15th May 2013, 22:41

At present I have been downgraded to 20" LCD TV. So I think its time to put my hand in my pocket and purchase a nice new shiny thin set.

I have been researching for a bit and with my budget (up to £1k) I have narrowed down to three makes! Samsung, Panny and...Philips.
Now I have always been a sort of anti-Philips person but have been won round with the positive reviews for this range of tvs.

I want a set with a thin beval, something about 46" screen, USB recording (I dont have Sky or PVR), decent clear and crisp picture, nice design and has the option of 3D - although I wont be using much I figure that why spend that much on a telly and not have it there?

So i`m looking at this one as my first choice Philips 46PFL8007. This has the new ambilight XL built in that makes me as a gadget freak excited.
With the Panny`s there are so many Vieras of that price bracket i`m confused with which is best or newest! and also they don`t have the record function.
Samsungs have so many options too - and reviews for some aren`t as good - they seem to only get better if you spend another £300+

So - has anyone recently bought a new telly? Or had any experience with these, especially the Philips one?

Gav

It may get good reviews. But I bet my balls the Phillips will break.

I like my balls.

Another vote to avoid anything Philips make.
Panny are always consistently good and Samsung are pretty innovative for features whilst still retaining quality.

Another consideration is your 3D thing. I just paid £220 for 4 extra pairs of 3D glasses for my projector. Wasn`t expecting it and pushed the costs way over budget, if you get a " passive" 3D tv you can use the specs from the cinema for a couple of quid a pair.

I`d also recommend joining Richer Sounds VIP list and their VIP lounge club, regularly good offers and the guys instore will give generally good advice.

[edit] had to come back and edit the typos cos I posted that on the iPhone... jeebus! [/endedit]

The last TV I bought, about 5 years ago, I spent quite a while reading reviews and checking prices and settled on a Toshiba as being the best bang for my buck. It`s crap. Lasted just past the warranty till the screen went weird (mentioned in another thread somewhere).
I`d go with the advice offered on here.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

My Philips Hi-fi from the early 90s is really well made. So they weren't always bad!

We did have a big Philips CRT before we got a Sony, and yes that went wrong a few times. :/

This is why i`m wary of Philips...hmmm.
I would be purchasing said set from Richer Sounds with 5 year warranty...
But the best thing would be if it didn`t go wrong at all. The news on the block is Philips dont actually make the tvs from this year a company that they part own do...and just use the Philips name.

I liked the the look of the Sony Bravia in the Sony shop this morning but i haven`t read anything on them yet.

Which Panny are you looking at?

The one I have from two years ago has USB ports, and the ability to add a standalone HDD as a PVR.So the recording option should be there.

If you want Internet capability and the most apps, and regular updates of apps, go for a Samsung. Panasonic are sitting on theirp proverbials when it comes to adding new abilities to existing sets. We still haven`t got 4OD or ITV Player yet, and the iPlayer app could use an update (on my TV it`s only available through Freesat, and not Freeview).

v happy with my Panasonic Tv I`ve had a few years, and the service from Richer Sounds, when the screen developed a faulty pixel after a couple of months.

regarding recording to USB, mine says it does it as well, I`ve never used it, but from what I read (may have improved since then) it can be fussy about the usb device, it may use it`s own format so you can`t have anything else on it, and uses up a lot of space quickly, so in short, not really that great. I usually record to my V+ box, when i can`t, the TV outputs to my old Panasonic hard drive/dvd recorder via scart and can record via TV`s freeview timer.

You were one of the lucky ones.

No, seriously! ;)

If Philips are outsourcing to another department or division that would ring instant alarm bells with me and I`d stay well away.
Sammy used to make Plasma screen panels for quite a few "no name" brands when Plasma started to take off, it was basically last years screen in a new case but with electronics from the "no name" manufacturer.
Usually found they screwed up after a couple of years but most of the time the screens were OK it was the other parts that went faulty.

My opinions of Phony are well known so I won`t go there.

Try and get some side by side demos, with the same source and player (old trick, change the player or input to a lower quality one when pushing a certain brand) and if possible, playing with it on your own.

Saw a new LG in RS last week, £19999.99 :D passive 3D and 4K HD.
It was running a 720p 3D demo and looked great, not just the resolution but looks like a newish idea or technology introduced to the screen for when you walk around the set, a bit like looking out a window and gave the effect the picture was stretching into the distance from either side, so if you were on the right it seemed to go off into the left behind the actual frame.

Very nice effect but for 20 grand I`d be wanting the actual window LOL.

Sony (sorry Jimbo) have just announced pricing on their 4K 55"/65" sets. A surprisingly reasonable £4k/£6k respectively.
