If you thought the UK was a police state (still not sure why you'd think that)

This is quite something:

Let's arrest a black news reporter without explanation live on TV! And then arrest his crew shortly after, and leave the live broadcast camera just there on the ground.

Thank God we're not like that in this country...

We definitely have problems, especially with racial profiling, and stop and search policies. :/

The way she starts calling him 'mate' in that immediate 'talk to them like you're from the endz' manner. 'Sir' would have been better... just pretend he's a middle-aged white man in a suit.

When I was a rookie at the Child Support Agency, I made the mistake of calling a Scot "mate" whilst trying to explain what I was doing and what I needed from him.

That triggered a tirade in my headset that could be heard three banks of desks away.

Pure slip of the tongue, didn't even realise I'd done it until I heard his response...

I think that if you're in the police you just have to treat everyone with equal respect, even if it's a total prick doesn't really deserve it.

Equally if it's a white working class bloke on a building site, he's not your mate, and you're not really making a 'special connection' by pretending you're on his level.

I find it really grating when someone who doesn't naturally walk around calling people 'mate', drops the mate bomb on me.

Australians do have special dispensation, however.

That's fine mateĀ

I do think they the police are overdoing it with these lockdown powers, i have never seen so many police cars watching park carparks and having words if a car pulls in, and police on mounted horses telling people to move on as they have been sitting on park benches for 10 minutes.

Maybe it is time for them to go after real criminals and stop picking on the public, be they black or white or whatever shade.

On a separate subject but still about police state worries, Many American towns and cities are in a state of protests and riots, with buildings and cars burning, after the black man killing by kneeing his neck.

Four police men were sacked and the kneer, now given 3rd degree manslaughter charges, but not 1st degree.

Was watching it live on Youtube live channels, with public confronting police and national guard. What a carry on, a lot of anger there. And all this happening during a virus pandemic.

No excuse for what he did.

No excuse for the riots.

The Killer Mike speech doing the rounds is good on the riots (he's not a fan and comes from a police family)

Riots are pretty much always bad of course, but I can see the genuine frustration of the powerless seeing the same things happening over and over again with absolutely nothing done about it.
