We need to talk about Harvey

Given the raison d'etre of this site I don't think we can afford to ignore the current media storm circling round the not inconsiderable girth of Harvey Weinstein.

Whilst I'm not belittling what he's done, which is hideous, I'm a little surprised by the amount of air time and column inches devoted to it. Mostly I would guess that is due to the high profile actresses involved.
Essentially though it's someone using their power to control others, Robert Maxwell, Jimmy Saville extend the list as you want but it the motivation doesn't have to have been sex.

Having heard the tape of the actress that was wired when he tried to get her to his room and the accounts of others about his methods I doubt that he will ever do time over it as there doesn't appear to have been physical coercion used and there are no doubt a slew of attorneys already planning what to do with the millions it will cost him to stay free.

Hollywood's breast beating and 'this culture is now at an end' is frankly more boll**ks than the worst B movie plot. It will continue as long as one person has something someone else desperately wants and can exact a price for it.

I kind of hope this is a watershed moment, a passing of that type of individual. There are still not enough powerful women in Hollywood, but maybe there is enough now that the "casting coach" will be resigned to history.

Weinstein got away with it because of his power, and the risk of him being accused would mean an actor would never work again. Maybe now the risk is greater for the abuser than the abused? At least I hope so.

This has turned into a media feeding frenzy, it's all the salacious gossip that they could have hoped for, a year's worth all in one story.

We're talking allegations of crimes where normally in the UK, the victims' identities would remain anonymous. But most of this happened in the US, where they have statute of limitations, where prosecutions can no longer occur. So we get the titillation of getting actresses named in paper, grubby details of alleged infractions published in the press, plastered across the nightly news.

It's become less about the victims, it's become less about Weinstein. It's become about the public, the appetite for such gossip. There's the hypocrisy of the Academy kicking out the unconvicted, indeed uncharged Weinstein, while doing nothing about the guilty fugitive Polanski, about Cosby, about Woody Allen.

And Herr Trump breathes a sigh of relief as the spotlight briefly turns away from him, and he gets to say nothing about 40 dead, hundreds missing, and billions of dollars of property incinerated in California. Feel like declaring a state of emergency, sending in some aid, or are you unable to juggle more than one disaster at once, mein Fuhrer?

Louis CK

interesting how he has held his hands up and admitted what he did, said what he did was wrong, and admitted he abused his celebrity status :(
