Paull (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 15th February 2012, 10:50

My Older Dell that needs a reinstall is. 3.1. My Asus is now 4.9. Is this good or bad?
I would also be interested in the performance of others.laptop, computer.

Sorry to sound really dense, but what do those numbers mean, and how do you calculate them?

It`s the Window Experience Index.  Rates your computers CPU, Memory, HDD, Graphics and Gaming Graphics and gives you a number based on the weakest link out of the five categories.

It depends what you`re using it for and you`ll most likely get the lowest score on the primary hard disk transfer rate. Mine`s 7.3 overall (lowest on graphics) but my hard disk transfer is only 7.5 and that`s using an SSD drive which is much faster than a standard one.

42% - it`s in the control panel under review system status then review performance. It`s only on versions of Windows after XP (I think)

If you type "performance" into the start menu search bar, the first option should be "Performance Information And Tools".

Alternatively, go to "My Computer" and right click on the white space, then choose Properties.

Mine is a 4.4 because I decided to buy my computer practically the day before multiple core processors became fashionable. My awesome 7.1 for graphics is severely bottlenecked :(

I`m not sure anybody takes the "Windows Experience Index" as a worthwhile metric. The fact it takes your worst component as your index is silly for a start.

Having a slow hard drive bring the entire score down (it`s usually that which does it) is rather meaningless, if you have more RAM than you ever use, and rarely do anything beyond browsing the internet and sending email.

It rates my graphics card on my workstation as 6.8, but I`m pretty sure it`s not that great because it`s a fair few years old now. :)

Well, you learn something new every day. This Packard Bell PC is 4.3, for what it`s worth. Does everything I want it to do, that`s for sure. I think that`s all that matters really.

It`s funny reading the Guru3D forums. There are people on there who try out every single video card driver (including betas) in the hope of gaining a few extra 3D Mark points.
