ah well..now we`re talking my sort of DVD posting!!...I think the Rajput in Harrogate deserves a mention, as does the Spice of India in Lewisham, and all those places in Huddersfield I frequented as a student, especially Sher-i-Punjab, whose production of extra fried onions is legendary. Finally, the establishments of St. Helen`s Road in Swansea should be treated with the utmost respect.

The Akash in Leicester was famous for it`s £5 all you can eat special. Also famous for having their curries stored in a large bath. Enabling them to have massive quantities of generic curry mix available for later colouring BRIGHT RED for your masala sir BRIGHT YELLOW for your korma. Probably a lie though.

The finest IMO (& I`ve visited many) would be my old local, the Shaheen in Belmont (nr Sutton, Surrey). Food is great & the service even better - treated like an old friend every time I go in (& always a free beer).

There are loads of dodgy ones about, and there are about 102 of them down Church Street in Stoke Newington alone. ;-)

My fave is The Bombay Brasserie in Kensington. Not just good food, but a nice restaurant too. You need to book in advance though... :-(

Saw one onTV once in Newcastle ( I think) and they claimed it was the hottest curry in the world and if you can eat it you get it for free, nobody had managed yet a couple tried.....poor Bas***ds!

I think Leicester and Birmingham curry houses win all the world curry competions...but I could be wrong!

bear

the curry house is called Rupalis and it`s slap bang in the centre of the Big Market. It`s called a "Curry From Hell" which just about sums it up :-)

As for nobody eating a full one, mate from work on his leaving do manged to bolt one down in 5 mins to the delight of his 25 mates screaming the house down. He`s got the certificate and photo to prove it!

I tasted it and it had my eyeballs watering it was that bad!

I though there were a couple of good ones in Cambridge - at least there were when I lived there.

The one that come to mind is I think called Queen Curry, near the Barron of Beef and Mitre (I think, used to walk from the Kings Street Run through the back streets), quite near the quay side, where Henrys and the trendy pubs are.

There is a great take away on Cherry Hinton Road though, near the Rock. Huge portions and quite hot.

Strange thing is that the curries are different where I live now - I would have a Dhansak in Cambridge which were hotter than a Madras, now in Doncaster the Dansaks are weaker than Kormas and have pineapple in them. Also in Cambridge the Keema Naans had tikka lamb, more like kebab meat, in the middle and were quite "chewy", now where I am they have minced lamb in and are more flour-ey.
