Devon and Cornwall suggestions

Fowler9 (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 27th March 2007, 11:25

I`m off down to Devon / Cornwall with the g/f for a week as of sunday (1st April), could those members who live down there (or even those members who have been down recently its been a fair few years since i went to that neck of the woods) suggest any

1) Attractions worth a visit

2) Towns / Places that are nice to go see (from my youth and trips down with parents some 15 years ago i remember places like Looe, Tintagel, Boscastle etc etc but what they arelike these days or whether they are worth re-visiting i wouldnt know)

that sort of thing that i could look into before departing
(staying nr Plymouth if that effects any suggestions)

Chris

I shall ask Cath if I see her later. She is from Tintagel. There is a really nice hidden waterfall thing where people leave spells and messages. It`s name escapes me at the mo.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

If you`re staying near Plymouth, the Eden Project is worth a look :-)

we went to Cornwall 2 years ago, enjoyed it. Tintagel was really nice. i was surprised how much I liked Eden project, went cos gf wanted to but we both happily spent all day there.

i forget where else we went. We picked up a National Heritage leaflet from a tourist center and visited lots of castles and forts. Pendennis was good.

i wouldn`t bother with Lands End, just tourist tat really.

We stayed in Truro. The cathedral there is nice, well it`s a cathedral, and the coffee shop is good and cheap :)

Although I`ve never actually been there, I`ve always wanted to go to Fowey (pronounced Foy as in boy). It looks like the archetypal Cornish fishing village. Daphne du Maurier famously lived there.

You`ll go there, it`ll be s*** and you`ll blame me...

Off the top of my head.

Shire Horse Centre.
SDR Buckfastleigh - Totnes & Dart Valley Railway - Paignton - Kingswear.
Plym Valley Line.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Go see my mum. :)

If you go to Sainsburys in Truro, that is on the site of my old sixth form college. And just up the road is Richard Lander School where I did my GCSEs.

Pendennis in Falmouth is good. Then park up at Gyllynvase beach and walk around the path to Swanpool beach, munching an icecream as you go. The main town shopping area will probably be fairly quiet.

When I was there a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning at 11am, it felt like Sunday morning 8am it was so quiet. The town shops are built along one main street that runs alongside the waterfront. You can sit outside the pub at Custom House Quay and watch the boats go slowly by. Or there are plenty of tea rooms where you can get a Cornish cream tea with proper clotted cream*.

From Prince of Wales pier you can take a boat across the Harbour to St Mawes where Pendennis` sister castle is. They were built to defend the river Fal from boats sailing up to Mylor bridge and Truro.

Goonhilly Earth Station on the Lizard do tours. It is the largest and oldest satellite station on Earth. 60 HUGE satellite dishes if thats your kind of thing to see.

And why not go to Newquay or Bude and have some surfing lessons?

Gweek seal Sanctuary?

*Proper as in Cornish, none of the devonshire bootleg stuff.
