"I`ve never read Harry Potter, but I still want them banned"

Whatever your opinion of the books, you have to admit this cow deserves a slapping

Quote:
On the forms, she wrote that she objected to the series' "evil themes, witchcraft, demonic activity, murder, evil blood sacrifice, spells and teaching children all of this."

So harry potter is a textbook for required learning now? And at what point in the books are demons included?
Quote:
She wrote she had not read the series because it is long, and she is a working mother of four.

But she had time to make her soapbox.

People like this p*** me off for 2 reasons. One, they`re completely ignorant of the things they`re getting so worked up about and two, people are actually giving them a public forum with which to spout their uninformed drivel.

If you want to get rid of a book that contains evil, incest, torture, debauchery, satan (by any other name), rapes, orgies, murder, then I strongly suggest you file a complaint against the bible

Not so much American but just fanatically religious. Moving from London to the bible belt of the midwest you wouldn`t believe the crazy things I hear or see. I thought hollywood exagerrated the whole excessive christianity thing but it is not far from the truth. They are few and far between but I have met some truly excessive, highly religious but `archaic` people who`s views are excessive and unwilling to accept anything else other than the word of God. This is not necessarily a bad thing as long as their views do not interfere or put fear in others, which some unfortunately feel the need to do.

I`m writing my dissertation on Video Nasties at the minute.. and this is very similar to Mary Whitehouse`s views on Video.. in an interview on Anne and Nick at the time.. she admitted she had never seen a video nasty and didn`t need to.. she knew what the content was from her `advisors`.. seems the world never tires of hypocritical, sanctimonious, mad, old bints..

....or a super-courageous, tough independent thinking woman who stood up to her beliefs, risked ridicule and humiliation and went against the incoming tide...and, unfortunately (IMHO) lost.
I admire her courage, stamina and fortitude.

If she had had her way we would all be watching songs of praise. Even the Heaven and earth show would be to risky for her.

Dr 42%er.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

whaaaaaaat?.. Mary Whitehouse??.. She was a selfish, media hungry, moral panicker... loving nothing better than to try and dictate to the working classes what they should and shouldn`t be watching.. she was clinging on to victorian values and trying to enforce them with a christian ethos on the rest of us... and she was a strong supporter of clause 28 and if she had her way.. you would have been before a firing squad..

so .. yes a woman of courage and fortitude.. and I for one am glad she is dead.. I had a little party in 2001 when she died.. I`m saving the huge street party for thatcher.. and I have bought special dancing shoes for when i visit her grave

Giving people whose views you don`t agree with a forum is surely what democratic debate is, or shoud be about?

Absolutely, and I believe everyone should be able to voice their opinion, it just p***es me off incredibly when people as uninformed as this are regarded as authorities on a subject they`re obviously too stupid to understand
