DVD Comparison Sites

daveo (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 9th May 2001, 11:19

Are there any sites out there that allow you to enter a DVD title and you are presented with a list of retailers and there prices, so that you can pay the lowest price?

If not, I am considering investgating the feasibility of creating such a site...

Here`s a couple:

www.dvdupdate.com - This is a UK based site (I think) & will let you search for R1 & R2. I haven`t used it for a while, but it used to be OK.

www.dvdpricesearch.com - This is a US site, which I haven`t really used before. Let me know if it`s any good.

Neither of them will let you search on all regions, which is a bit of a shame since the Australian retailers are usually v.cheap, and also they don`t give you any idea about postage.

Hope this helps.

So if I could construct some sort of site that could search the globe, regardless of Region Code, it would be successful?

It depends on how you classify successful !

I think it would be a usefull place to look for DVD prices, and I for one would probably use it.

The trick is to make sure that it searches as many suppliers as possible. The sites I use are good, but no one site covers all the suppliers that I`d like to search.

I can`t decide whether the sites people have listed above are actually going to each site for each query or have an `up-to-date` database on there own site. If it automatically went off and got each result everytime it was run it would take quite some time to provide an answer.

I think they must have their own database, as I`ve been told a price before which was different when I actually went to the site to buy the DVD. Like you said, they return an answer a bit too quickly to have gone and searched all the sites there and then.
