Advice required from Pink Floyd fans!

sput2001 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 1st December 2003, 16:14

I`m gradually building up my Floyd CD collection, which currently reads as follows:

Meddle
Dark Side Of The Moon
Wish You Were Here
Animals
The Wall
A Momentary Lapse of Reason
The Division Bell

plus live albums:
Is There Anybody Out There
Delicate Sound Of Thunder
Pulse

Which album(s) should I go for next???

You`ve got all the `accessible` stuff really apart from The Final Cut. If you like The Wall then you should like this. "The Fletcher Memorial Home" is great.
Of the earlier, more psychedelic stuff, I prefer `A Saucerful of Secrets` to `The Piper at the Gates of Dawn`.
They`re a band of `thirds` really in terms of eras (Syd Barrett, Waters and beyond..) and you, like most, have got all the good later stuff but are definitely missing out on some earlier classics like Set The Controls For the Heart of the Sun.
There was an album released a couple of years back - Echoes with some of the earlier things on but there`s a lot of repetition of things you already have.

Why don`t you go for the new, remastered `Live in Pompeii` DVD?

Being a devoted Floyd fan for many years i would have to strongly agree with the last post....You must get the final cut and the new remastered `Live in Pompeii` DVD is essential. However, the mother of all floyd albums is the sacd(super audio compact disc) 5.1 version of dark side of the moon! It`s without doubt totally stunning(worth the price of a sacd player alone). In fact i did buy a lovely sony dvd/sacd player purely for DSOTM and the Bob Dylan back catalogue and have never looked back!!
Roger waters 3 solo albums( `the pros and cons of hitch-hiking,radio kaos and amused to death) are also excellent(very floydy); and dave gilmores` early solo efforts are also worth checking out too.
hope this helps you on your search for more things floyd!

See if you can get hold of any of the bootleg albums, there are quite a few tracks that are really cool.

Tracks like Come in number 51 your time is up, which is from Zabraski Point, Point me to the sky (a classic syd barret song), also Pigs on the Wing, where parts one and two, are joined by a very cool melodic electic guitar, and of course the movie version tracks of The Wall, which include Mother, What Shall we do.

Cheers folks. The Pompeii dvd is on my Christmas list, although I`m not 100% Santa will deliver - I`ll raid CD-Wow if he doesn`t!! Looks like I`ll invest in "The Final Cut" next, although I`ve always been a bit apprehensive about it (Waters finally disappears up his own backside etc.), I`ll give it a shot.

I`ve also thought very seriously about getting a combined dvd/sacd player for precisely the purpose of listening to the DSoM re-release. I need to see what sort of Christmas bonus I get!!!

I have to agree - The Final Cut is excellent, if you try not to think about how up his own arse Roger Waters is on it. The Wall was a theme/concept album too, after all.

Final Cut was a sort of sequel to The Wall, where it expands more about his dad and world war II, his marrage break up.

Not Now John was an attack on Alan Parker, who directed the movie version of The Wall, because the director wasn`t interested about the album, more on how much money it would make.

Roger Waters went on to do Pros and Cons about Hitchhiking, which was originaly one of the choices he gave to the Pink Floyd band members, between that and The Wall.

Waters` best album I think so far, is Amused to Death, which is the original Bowling for Columbine, in which he basically moans about Americans gung ho attitude to guns, war whilst claiming to be christians.

Two of the best live versions of The Wall is out. The o ne is Live in Berlin, and the other Pink Floyd - 1980-1981: Is There Anybody Out There?

I think Roger Waters is a brillient song writer, and Dave Gillmore was a brillient gutarist, and you can tell they were lost without each other.

Personally I think they were the Lennon/and McCartney of the 70s.

Big time Floyd Fan. Agreed with the posts about Final Cut, except if you`re feeling gloomy, it get`s hard going.

The Wall Live album is incredible, as is P.u.l.s.e (we so need a DVD of that!).

Go for Atom Heart Mother too. It`s not a popular choice, but I like it.

I think Roger Waters best Solo Album is Radio KAOS.

Floyd,
You on commission from Play.com ;-)
For me, Amused To Death is Waters` best solo album.
I`m not a big fan of the `Berlin` The Wall to be honest. Some great performances let down by some mediocre ones. People playing parts who didn`t appreciate just what they were taking part in? Not a big fan of Jerry Hall either..
Is There Anybody.... on the other hand is another story. But you`ve got that one.
A good point raised however is broadening slightly and I`d give `Amused To Death` a try too..

Just a small vote for the Final cut to fill your album collection
I was brought up with Floyd from my Brother via enforced listening along with a load of Genesis .
I strongly recommend Peter Garbriel whose music I love especailly the first three albums .
I remember seeing the Wall in my early teens at late night cinema ,what a memory.
Next week wa Led Zep .
What happenned to good music I am so fed up with the crap around with modern manufactured stuff .
I hope pop idol fades away and Simon Cowley is terminated by an upset contestant with an Uzi.... Ok maybe a bit strong but did he have to set the fastest time on Top Gear !!!
