Important national debate on GM (frankenstien food)

Colin Mac (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 3rd June 2003, 17:16

I hope you will all be taking part in next six weeks of national debate on GM foods.

If you do not speak out now, it will shortly be introduced in mass quantites to the UK and NOT labeled as such.

At present European law has prevented a LARGE influx of USA GM crops, but this may change shortly if we do not speak up..

It is up to you, the general public to show distaste for GM and to fight against this GM onslaught, as it has not been proven as safe !!!!!!!!!!!!

Tasted alright though ;-)

I`m with Fozzy on this. With all due respect Colin, this whole thing smacks of a very basic fear of the unknown. I`m not going to publicly decry something that has not been proven unsafe/safe without sounding foolish.

However, I agree that GM foods should not be allowed into the foodchain without proper research, and indeed, proper labelling.

I think GM foods can bring bring benefits, for example apples with more vitimins etc etc

What I don`t think is right is releasing herbicide resistant, and plants that make thier own herbicides - cross contamination will happen (which I belive has been shown already) - oh and did you hear about that Canadian farmer that has been sued by Monsanto (who won the case) because his crops were pollinated by thiers? Seems the only people that are allowed to plant these seeds are monsanto registered farmers.

There needs to be proper controlled study, and we shouldn`t cave into pressure from the US just because they want us too.

Don`t you just love being invited to a public debate with this tag line:

"It is up to you, the general public to show distaste for GM and to fight against this GM onslaught, as it has not been proven as safe !!!!!!!!!!!!"

Do you even know what the word "debate" means? It is not clubbing those with different opinions to death (with your unceccessary punctuation presumably) when they step through the door. Pehaps your negative onslaught is incorrect? At least allow it to be debated. You seem to be confusing debate with protest (oh I wish the US would attack Syria to give these people soemthing to do).

My intention was only to bring this debate to the attention of others, but I see you noticed that I am slightly biased.

Well Done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (unnec puntuation, a bit too habit forming)
