The sixth sense

steveFTM (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 9th January 2001, 01:18

ive just sat down to watch this after buying it today however i am having the following problem. When the film is past its opening titles (i.e. the spy glass logo) it plays the movie with green and white lines continously running down the sides of the screen. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what is it and what did they do about it????. By the way i am playing this dvd on a wharfedale 750s. Needless to say it will be going straight back to smiths possibly with the guy who served me getting a punch.

I`m in the US (region 1). Playing it on a Sampo 620 with region coding and macrovision off. Works A-OK here...

The ONLY thing I can think of is secure all connections. I had wavy lines once in awhile and when I replaced all the cables with new, it went away. I swore they were good...

Steve,

Don`t take it back ! - it`s a known issue on the 750S and is easy to work around.

When the green and white lines start to occur, press STOP and the OSD should show `STOP RESUME` now press SETUP on the remote to enter setup mode followed by EXIT to leave setup mode and then press PLAY and the film will resume from where you left it and without the annoying green and white lines.

This workaround works on my 3rd generation 750S and a colleagues 2nd generation machine.

Cheers

Chris

That worked a treat mate. Is this a common problem with a lot of dvds on the wharfie????. Is it down to the player or is it the disk.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

I believe its a firmware issue on the 750/750S, but as you saw its easily worked around.

I`ve got in excess of 50 disks now and have access to about another 100 with disks in friends collections that I occassionally borrow and I`ve only ever seen this phenomenon on sixth sense(R2).

My collection is split about 30 R1 and 20+ R2.

I have things such as T2 Ultimate ED(R1), The Patriot(R1(RCE)), ID4(R1) and other such technically challenging titles for the player to handle and they all work perfectly.

The Wharfie in region free mode didn`t even notice RCE on the Patriot which was a real result, and I`m just about to order Hollow Man (R1) which is also RCE encoded.

The only other hiccups I`ve come across with the 750S was on R2 Stigmata where two hangs occur, but these were sorted by doing stop/resume so not really a great problem, and I borrowed R1 Tigger the movie for my kids and that locked the player up during one of the games in the extra features, but the film itself played fine.

All in all I`m very impressed with the player and would recommend it.

Cheers

Chris

I`ve got the Sixth Sense R1 and it plays well on a 750S. However please tell me where the hangs are for Stigmata R2, as I have it but haven`t got around to watching it in its entirety. I like my 750s (especially the MP3 feature. Nice for when you want non-stop music. Good for lazy so and so`s like me who can`t be bothered with switching CDs over every 74mins or so...)

Bennyboy,

The first hang on Stigmata (R2) that I witnessed on my 3rd Generation 750S was in the Church soon after the start of the film, you see the old priest in the coffin, and then blood begins to cover him, as the blood starts to cover him, it hung there - but a stop/resume -> play fixed it quite easily.

the second and final hang occured at the layer change, whilst not fatal it was a litle more stubborn in that I had to stop/resume, play about 3 times to get it going again.

Other than that the film played fine, and all the extras worked fine too.

Hope his helps

Cheers

Chris

Chris,

Thanks very much for your help. I`ll keep my eyes open for these and let you know how I get on. I think I`ve got the 2nd Generation of Wharfedale 750s.

Cheers again.

BennyBoy. ;-)
