Public Enemies DVD soundtrack duff? (Michael Mann)

RJS (undefined) posted this on Sunday, 20th March 2011, 17:41

So we sat down to watch this Saturday night, and had to turn it off 10 minutes in, because firstly we thought something had gone seriously wrong with our sound system, and then realised it was the DVD.

Dialogue was muffled and hard to understand, sound levels were all over the place, surround was non existant.

From googling there are forum threads with people saying it is the same on Blu-ray, others saying it was ok in the cinema, and blame on Mann being deaf these days, and then lots of slagging off of reviews which all say the sound is fantastic.

What the hell is going on! Does anyone else have this?

I have the region 2 DVD, and no problems soundtrack wise for me.
Strange indeed.

There were alot of people complaining about the film`s sound in general, but it was more along the lines of the dialogue being difficult to hear at times, and sound effects being obscenely loud.
I put it down to Michael Mann going for a realistic, disorientating feel though.

I remember it having a very poor sound mix (eg very low dialogue in the car after the first prison escape). That crossed with the terrible digital filming method made the film look very amateurish.

I honestly couldn`t believe this was a Michael Mann film when I saw it.

Hmm, I`m beginning to wonder if there are different mixes of this film floating around. It`s so bad I`m amazed anyone could say it wasn`t the worst sound mix they`ve ever heard, unless there really are multiple ones.

The dialogue in the car is incredibly mumbled and very quiet in comparison to everything else, the bullets are insanely loud.

Don`t think there are different mixes, but it`s definitely one of those films where if you hear the problems you`ll find it hard to concentrate on anything else. I remember it being a bit iffy at the cinema and a lot of BD reviews have confirmed this.
