Beowulf in 3D...

AMAZING

Just an experience to see, I honestly didn`t realise digital 3D was this far along.

The film is mostly action and the mo-cap didn`t bother me at all.

If you fancy this film track down a cinema projecting it in digital 3D (or even Imax, which must be better). Stunning, just stunning. Don`t know what I`d have thought about it seeing it on regular 35mm, but I guess it`s like a cross between 300 (excessive visual style) and Lord of the Rings (a lot of the action is kinda similar). Good fun, nothing more, but in 3D a great experience.

Ideally I`d like to see it in Angelina-Jolie-in-my-pants-o`vision, but they haven`t invented that yet (have they?)

As a result of this review chewie, I`ve booked tickets for the 12.45pm showing on Sunday at the IMAX, in glorious 3D.

Phew! I heard about Cineworld installing Real-D projectors in their cinemas a while ago, but when I checked their 3D screenings the other day my local cinema wasn`t listed as showing it (even though it was one of the ones on the Cineworld press release).

Seems now they`ve added it! :D Woo St Helens!

chewie, did you see it at Cineworld? What are the 3D glasses like?

email from my Odean lists it as Beowulf 3d, but cineworld just lists it as Beowulf.

So is the whole film 3d, do you wear glasses the whole time?

Yeah I saw it in Cineworld. Glasses are solid black plastic, much better than the cardboard freebies I was expecting. And I need to wear glasses at the cinema anyway and they fit easily over them. Real D, never heard of it until now, but apparently this is the "cheapest" way to see Beowulf in 3D, I can only imagine how much better IMAX will be.

Put it this way, last 3D experience I had in a cinema was Spy Kids 3D, and that was s***, crappy glasses and everything was green and red... probably best described as an expensive version of a breakfast cereal hologram gimmick. Plus it was only small sections of the film that was 3D. Beowulf is 3D for the entire duration and in full colour. It`s impossibly crisp and everything just looks fantastic. I can now understand why Zemeckis, Cameron, etc want to pursue this way of filmmaking because this isn`t something that can be easily replicated on your home cinema. Even the largest screen will be insufficient to overwhelm its viewer, which is what this seems to be about. Beowulf is a proper popcorn film that I imagine would work perfectly well as a normal projection, so the 3D isn`t the unique selling point.

And on another note, there is no way this film should be a 12A. I`m not going into detail on why, but anyone with young kids might be best not to take them to this. It may be a fantasy film, but its based on adult themes and features plenty of blood and sexual material. Although I imagine the downgrade from an R to Pg-13 in America is the reason for the almost Austin Powers style "hide the sausage".
