Page 1 of Blu-Ray imminent death!!!
DVDs & Films Forum
Doesn`t look good folks. Nothing like a bit of sensationalist reporting to upset everyone eh?
Any Blu-Ray owners/supporters here? What do you think?

They said Blu-Ray was the new Betamax...

Much as I will enjoy watching Bluray join the Sony format graveyard I think its a bit early for that.
The HCC story is merely conjecture about a possibility we all knew about anyway.
That finalised BD-J will not be compatible with current players.
As annoying as that will be for some buyers it wont be that films are unplayable.
Its a stab in the back for early adopters but only PS3 buyers will feel the pinch.
Lets be honest, the number of Bluray standalones sold to mugs wont be much higher than numbers on your national lottery card ,so its not a big deal in real terms for users but its certainly good ammo for HDDVD supporters to laugh at Blu-ray punters

I think not. For instance, and best res is 1080p/24. That`s 1080p at 24 frames per second is not yet out there for the masses. Only a few screens can do it and less players. Pioneer have their first one at around a grand in the autumn. The PS3 now has it via it`s free internet updates. As long as it is just software I can`t see to much of a problem. Then again I am probably talking s***e.

Dunno...think most people here would happily accept your advice and opinions without calling them "s***e"

I`d have thought PS3 owners would be the safe ones. They can upgrade their console more easily than people who`ve bought standalone BD players (all three of `em).
Still couldn`t give a toss about HD DVD or BD. Too expensive, especially when you take the cost of a new screen into consideration. They both seem to be pushing forward with new standards that might or might not be compatible with older players.
As others have said, I want a sub £200 player and a decent 1080p screen that can do 24fps for less than £600. Can`t believe we still have all these stupid framerate issues in 2007...
Looks like BD might win the format war, which I would hate because Sony suck.

Couple of interesting Blu Ray/ HD-DVD stories
Warner Delays BD/HD-DVD Compatible Total HD Disc
Analyst: Fraction Of Console Owners Using Video Capabilities
The 2nd story is interesting, `cos I remember when I got my GameCube ppl saying how stupid it was it didn`t play DVDs, but I didn`t care cos I had a DVD player, when cheap ones were just under £100 in Richer Sounds :)
But now, if I was to get a 360+hd-dvd drive, or PS3, i would start buying films on that format, but I have no desire to buy a dedicated Blu Ray or HD-DVD player. Can`t see buying one until they are cheaper than the consoles. But by then I`ll have probably got a new console, to play games, so will prob use the movie playback features.

I think if I got either a 360+HD drive, or a PS3, I might buy one or two movies on their respective formats. But whether the image quality is superior to regular Doovde or not (and I think it`s safe to say that it is), the fact remains that I would not be interested in replacing my beloved DVD collection. Not by a long chalk.
I`m one of those old-fashioned sorts that thinks Hollywood should concentrate more on the bloody content of the movies rather than the image quality. DVD is still where it`s at for movie fans I reckon, but it seems image quality is a major focus for studios these days. I have to say they have been largely unsuccessful in convincing me that I need to spend money on new kit.

I have no intentions of swapping over from DVD to HD or Blu Ray; I couldn`t really care less about how much sharper and clearer the picture and sound is, even though I accept that you can tell the difference, all the studios will be thinking is how much can we screw the public.
Take Sony for example, we all know for a fact they`ll bring out a super-bit type thing on Blu Ray, just like they did with DVD, and say the picture and sound is now even sharper than before, we all know that Warner and various other companies won`t bring out any of their films in DTS, and they`ll still continue to bring out the movies on 5.1 even though there`s more memory on a HD/Blu Ray disc.
Not only that, the companies will hold back on the extra content, and try and force us to buy the super ultimate editions now containing even more never before seen extras, it's like the old saying, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
As I said before I no doubt the picture and sound are amazing, but the companies will treat this as a marketing gimmick.

RE: Blu-Ray imminent death!!!
I can`t get my head round the old "I am not going to replace my old DVD`s. No way sir" argument. No one is asking you too. It is backwards compatible. Keep your old DVD`s and just buy your new films on the new format. It`s not that hard.

Do you use that reasoning not to buy standard DVD?
