What can I say about this?? im upto episode 3 of 8 of this staggering family drama about a Korean family going back to the Japanese occupation of Korea till the late 90's New York.
Its subtitled so if that's not your thing then it is definitely your loss, based on a NY Times best seller its an extraordinary production, the most beautiful and nuanced script iv ever watched brought to life, the actresses they got to play Sunja especially Minha Kim in her full tv debut from what I can tell is just perfect, and she for me was not as captivating as the youngest version!!
The whole ensemble cast was truly breathtaking and kept you completely immersed in the story, the one issue some may have is the jumping back and forth in time without rhyme or reason does take some getting used to but anyone who has enjoyed my reviews and wouldn't be put of by the subtitles please get over to Apple TV and give this a go.....television at its best

I am not young enough to know everything.
So finished the series and absolutely without doubt my favourite foreign show ever, just perfect really including a very important history lesson for us foreigners about the way Korea and Japanese history was intertwined after the Japanese occupation of Korea which I had no clue about.
the Koreans were treated shockingly by Japanese empire Then encouraged to migrate to Japan as manual labourers and once there treated like slaves and blamed for anything and everything that went wrong in their country, sounds familiar? Wind rush anyone?? the show itself was heartbreaking yet somehow uplifting! Due to the cast, writing and stunning direction which has to be seen to be believed meaning my initial reservations about the time jumps made perfect sense and show how to film an almost unfilmable book.
the ending where they interview women in 70s to over a hundred who lived the story was breathtaking and reminded me of the finale of the corner from many moons ago

2nd se 23 August, happy happy man
So just started the second season, like a lot of tv shows I wasn't for some reason desperate to watch it even though I though the 1st season was spectacular, after 10 minutes picking up immediately from the 1st series I remembered why I was so enamoured with the show, cast writing and the fact that like few others it really moves me in so many different ways,
Now 2nd episode was the most powerful heart wrenching moving episode of television I have seen in years, probably going back to The Corner the HBO miniseries from decades ago (it seems anyway) to such an extent I had tears rolling down my cheeks and I had to pause it and go out the back and play with the cat in the sunshine just to pull myself together, when I came back the tears immediately continued so the break was useless but the show is both uplifting and crushing, making me sad, hopeful angry and full of angst in the one scene and honestly im struggling to watch the 3rd episode, need a few still game or ted lasso before I can brave it but if subtitles dont put you off please give it a go
