RE: Windows 10 will be free
When that happened to me, I found that running Windows Update Troubleshooter fixed it, though I had to run it a couple of times...

I dual booted my laptop to Win10 yesterday, rarely do this, anyway it asked if I wanted to delete my old operating system, which has to have been Windows 7. Go Microsoft! You want to remove something I rely on, awesome.
Anyway, this weeks moan about Win 10 is followed up by something that hopefully makes it less annoying for people... how to turn off all that start menu advertising...

I normally stick up for Win 10, however overnight the TV PC froze, for last 15 mins the circles have been going round while it says
"Restoring your previous version of Windows..."
I have a bad feeling about this :(

hmmn, seems an update isn't working properly :( hopefully I can go from fast ring to a slower update cycle to not get this one, oh well, glad it's not hardware on it's way out, and looks just to be a risk of running the tech preview :(

quick google at work and I've found some workarounds, on MS' own blog so all will be fine when I get home, maybe :)

Another "how to turn off advertising in Win 10" option, this time for explorer:

my test machine under the TV did a big update last night (took over 90 mins to get to log in this morning when I turned it on)
if these ads are included, and they're a pain to remove, then this pc may go to Linux, or Win 7 or 10. the start menu ones went easy enough.
Actually, I have proper retail bought Win 7 and 8 DVDs, but don't have those machines, they died, will I be able to use those DVDs on this PC, since the license is no longer active on the original PC I sinstalled it on? Quick phonecall to MS when prompted, like when you change "too much" hardware, or world of pain so not worth the hassle? Actually 8 may have been on this machine before I went to 10, i can't remember! 7 was on a laptop that broke :(
this machine doesn't "need" to be windows, but at the time I wanted to keep it on bleeding edge so I knew what was going on in the world :)
I've got my work laptop, and the missus' laptop for win 10.

no adverts yet and it's done a couple more updates, other ppl like me using Insider tech preview haven't seen them, and something else I read suggested that the "some machines" may be those that were upgraded "free" from 7 or 8, which may explain why the missus' laptop doesn't have them so far either :(
I wonder if they'll backtrack since the "how to remove" guides popped up really quickly, but then I guess they know that most people don't have/don't know they have a choice :(
