Page 1 of Apple ITunes Match

Probably one for Miles.

Been thinking I could do with a bigger iPad but is pretty much purely because I have about 6gb of music on it at any one time which takes up the majority of space, but thinking now this could be the cheaper/easier option.

I had also been looking at iPhone and thinking I needed 64gb because of music.


Do you reckon this would actually be a good solution?

None of my music is purchased from within iTunes though...........

iTunes Match works as the name suggests and matches your iTunes library with tracks from their store, and anything they don`t match is uploaded to their servers.

Then your iOS devices (or other PCs / Macs) can download them (the ones that are matched are 256kbps AAC).]

The downside is that it`s limited to 25000 tracks (I`m currently on 21,500). Otherwise I think it`s a great service - and was the only thing stopping me from considering an Android phone.
Then this week Amazon launched the same service (same price) - but with a maximum of 250,000 tracks :)
So you might want to look at that instead (there`s an App for iOS I think).

After you said download then, does that mean you have to physically download tracks, was under the impression you would be able to stream?

Going to investigate this Amazon one now though.

Looks like the Amazon one does allow you to stream, but I`ll have to download it to confirm. I buy most (if not all) my music from Amazon, so I already have a fair few on there to try.

Got a mate who`s got a Mac mini, ps3, iPad and external drive where he keeps his tv shows/films etc

He`s been looking at my setup and basically was just asking how he could watch on his files on iPad.

I`ve said Airplayer is the way to go and he just needs to put his files on a shared folder on the Mac. Assume that should be easy enough to do, but I don`t know Mac`s?

Is it possible to make the portable drive viewable over DNLA whilst plugged in the Mac mini, or will he need to actual transfer the files he wants into a shared folder?

Yeah, he basically needs a DLNA server running on the Mac Mini.
Something like this http://www.tvmobili.com/ should probably do it.

I`ve not used it before, so I just downloaded it and installed it on the Macbook Pro.
It has configuration that enables you to add any directory / device (e.g. the USB drive) and therefore serve them up to the PS3 / iPad.

Just remember that both the PS3 & iPad have limited codec support, but if he`s already playing them back

I went around my mates and got that tvmobili working no problems.

He hadn`t been able to get it working and I literally did nothing on any of the settings apart from setting up the external drive as a shared folder (it had already selected the other folders so "should" already have been visible, but don`t know why he couldn`t find it).

It`s working spot on for what he needs.

Guys,

I have iTunes Match and I believe that the tracks that can`t be matched by iTunes count towards your 25,000 track limit. So the majority of your collection wouldn`t need to go into the cloud as they already hold the tracks on their servers.

Also, whilst you can`t stream to the iPod and iPad, you can stream it to a PC or via Apple TV.
