iPhone vs The Rest of the World.......Discuss

Right, first up I`m hoping RJS will allow this in here as the PC and Mobiles thread seems a bit quiet and a bit bereft of action. Cross fingers....

Right, down to business. There appears to be this rather worrying trend whereby people are being continually sucked into this train of thought that the good old iPhone is the only phone to own. This is wrong.

People aren`t wrong to say it`s good, it is, very good. HOWEVER, it is not the only very good phone out there and I bet given the chance, many many people would have chosen a different handset had their friends not led them to believe that iPhone is the best phone ever made. It is most certainly not.

So, for the purpose of peeps looking to see what really are the best phones out there, reasons for and against and viable alternatives to help them along :-)

Strictly no trolling!!!!!! ;-)

I will start :-)

The Nokia N9, is the closest phone yet to the simplistic beauty of Apples handset. Yes, I know you can`t get them over here, but they`re very easy to import and work perfectly with all UK based sim cards.

It is a beautiful handset and works so fluidly it kind of has you hooked from that first swipe on the screen.

Even gsmarena said this is the closest anyones come to matching Apples design ethos....

hello westy... welcome back :)

i`ve recently got an HTC Sensation XE and love it, although i do also like the iPhone and can see it`s appeal.

i prefer the more (seemingly) open os and system that android allows.

Howdoo stranger, long time no see :)

Anyhoo..  iphone vs..  well, lets be honest, it`s really iphone vs android,  (maybe winmobile 7 could be included here soon)   nokia is out of the game untill the windows phones start appearing, it`d be crazy to buy into a premium phone that runs symbian/meego etc, dead formats with no app support in the future :(  not having a dig, just stating a (very) sad truth :(

i`ve currently got an iphone 3g,  it`s ancient & slow by any current standard, & i`d love to either upgrade to a "4" but the stupid prices put it out of my reach,  i have tried to dump it a few times in favour of an android phone (had 3 HTC desires, a galaxy europa, & currently have a Dell Streak 5")  but they dont compare when it comes to the audio player & battery life,  so i`m stuck with the iphone untill the battery issues are sorted, & a good audiobook player arrives (there are a couple of good droid audiobook apps, but they still dont come close to the iphone`s stock player)

i also dont think much of the droids actuall ability to work as a phone, (compared to my old nokia/iphone`s) maybe it`s better post droid 2.2, but i havn`t played with a gingerbread phone (yet ;) )

that said,  android is a brilliant touchscreen OS, & in all other ways is a dream to use, with the major + of reletively cheap devices of all shapes & sizes,  thats also it`s weakness (imo)  android does a reasonable job at doing Everything... whilst the iphone may not be as flexible, but it`s does what it does,  to a consistently excellent standard.

course,  thats just imo ;)

I started creating a thread like this this morning but got distracted :)
So I`ll post what I was writing here.

I`m yet to see an Android (or other?) phone working as well, for my requirements, but I`d happily be `turned`.
Personally, I think the iPhone is great. Not to the point that I`ll rave about it, because I`m fully aware it won`t suit everyone, but it does `just work` for the majority of users.

Just to set the story up...I got my first Apple device in 2002 when they finally made the iPod compatible with Windows (had to use "MusicMatch" to sync it back then).
I was in awe of that little device that enabled me to carry around 1,000 songs in my pocket.
However, MusicMatch was crap (I`d used it before and reverted to WinAmp) and there were always sync problems, for me at least.
Then Apple decided the iPods were getting enough traction in the Windows world to make iTunes for the PC and that was me hooked. It all worke well for me and my iTunes library continued to grow pretty quickly - and all syncing nicely with my iPod(s).
There were two further iPod upgrades after that initial one, and both of them were without issue given that I had everything in iTunes - plug new iPod in, sync, done.

Then came the iPhone...I could finally reduce my gadgets carried by one.

Apple seem to produce hardware and software that `just works` (for the majority of users).
Their `closed` environment ensures that you don`t get the kind of software fragmentation that is seen in the Android world, but it also angers a few users.

The things I like about the iPhone are:
1) It syncs perfectly with iTunes so fits in perfectly with my existing music & video library
2) It`s a great music and video player
3) Battery life is generally pretty good (I get 2-3 days out of my iPhone 4)
4) The App store is pretty damn good for the odd game / utility.

As you can probably tell from my story above that I see the iPhone as a portable music/video device that also (handily) can act as a phone and an Internet device - on the move. And that`s how I generally use it.

Right, so far I see two good posts in favour of the iPhone, I`m currently on a 3GS myself but as stated before it`s well past my upgrade time.

I have been thinking of going with an android phone but I also have my HP Pre3 which it looks like android is about to be ported succesfully to both that and my touchpad....

SIM only is still knocking around in my head for cost but it doesn`t mean I`m averse to buying a sim-free android phone although I have to admit I`m still leaning toward the iPhone again.
Convince me to save money someone cos I`m rapidly becoming skint ;)

sorry jim....  wish i could tell you i prefer my android, but the honest truth is, the only reason i don`t have a newer iphone is i cant afford it,  & it`s quite a testament that after 3+ years, i`m still using a very battered 3g, when you consider the life cycle of a mobile phone for me is usually less than 6 months lol...

Right then, some very decent replies here, nice to see people that used the iphone as it`s intended. I.e. as a device that can be an all in one. Tidy.

When it came to upgrade time about 2moro months ago, I was offered a simply amazing retention deal on a new iphone 4, however something was nagging me, "is it time to try something different?". I asked the friendly guy on the phone if I could hold the deal and call him back after a bit of deliberation, "no problem".....

An hours later I made a large gamble, this gamble really opened my eyes, it turned out. I went for the new Samsung Galaxy S2. Oh. My. God.

No matter how many people that see it, they just can`t put it down. It is simply an incredibly slick piece of kit. Having thought the Retina display was the best thing I`d ever seen, when I first booted the S2 my eyes were out on stalks!! The Super AMOLED Plus screen on this bad boy just makes the retina seem a bit dull (it actually hurt me to say it!), it is incredibly vibrant and full of detail.
Next is the speed, massively fast and never ever hangs, brilliant camera, great multi tasking, superb audio quality, plus with Threes HSPDA network speed it`ll download a full movie over the air from the Android market in about 20minutes!!!!

My point here as that I could have easily gone for the soft option and gone for another iphone, but I just fancied a change IOS`s beauty also causes its downfalls, and I just hope those due for upgrades realise there is a whole world of brilliant handsets that will do anything Apples baby can, it`s good to be different!!

Any other recommends?:-)
